I just installed XP and the drivers for my Diamond SupraMax 56k USB modem, and everything in XP looks fine for modem/networking settings, and it recognizes the modem and the modem has power... but when I tell XP to connect, it says it's dialing, but the modem doesn't dial... then eventually XP times out and says the connection failed...
Well, that's what happens when the modem won't dial!!! I know the modem is working (it works fine in 98), but it refuses to dial in XP...
What should I do??

Get a real modem. Not a WinModem or software modem of any kind. Not an external USB. Either an internal true hardware modem or external serial modem. Trust me, it's worth it.

I know usb modems arent supported by win2000 i am not sure about xp I read it somewere but forget, try the features guide on the xp cd it might be there. A buddy had the same problem he partitioned his drive 2 o/s used 98 for the internet and used 2000 for studing.

Same problem with me, i give up, iīve tried everything, e saw a list of compatibal ( in www.microsoft.com ; look for HCL ) hardware and SupraMax arenīt there, only the SupraExpress work with XP, i instaled an very old 33.6, that still work with de drivers for standart 33.6 modems and it work, i guess that we just have to waith for the drivers to be available.

I am experiencieng similar problems with a PCI modem. I have just bought the PC with HOME XP and all worked, but severe problems - I suspect RAM modules @ present, caused me to do a complete re-install wit 'new RAM'. All works fine now BUT the modem which will not dial out with IE or Hyperterminal, but looks OK with the AT type tests. Having scanned various documents ovr the last hour - including this page - I suspect that NT/2000/XP all may cause problems with some modems and DIAL TONE. TRY disabling Dial Tone and see what happens - I will try it on XP tomorrow.

I am also experiencieng similar problems with a Connexant HCF PCI modem.
And disabling the detection of the dial tone results in the same problem: the modem doesn't dial!
It seems XP has a major problem with some modems.

Diamond tell me that Supramax XP drivers are being worked on and should be available around the 18th of November.

yes, me too. I had a Motorola SM56 PCI modem, I thought it was that so I bought a new PCI modem, got official XP drivers for it, but it still doesn't dial. When I press the "query modem" button, it says to check that the "interrupt" on the port is set correctly.
I have still not found this setting anywhere.
The previous modem worked fine in 98.
Help!

A post on another forum says that XP supports only Comm ports 1 and 2, where my modem defaultly installs on 3. The other 2 are being used, but it doesn't say what by.
Is this true? If so, how can I rearrange the port usage if I don't know whats using them??

I have a 56K supramax usb and XP and i just plugged it in and it lit up and i can dial in and everything!
it works fine - only issue is that it mis reports the connection speed as 115.2K whcih isnt possible.
