Hi all, I am having an error with my memory stick (actually my friend is) and I am stumped. I am currently unable to access the jump drive after it's been working for months. All of a sudden it just stopped working and whenever I try to access it in My Computer it tells me to "Please Insert Removable Disk." I already tried reinstalling the driver and it doesn't work on a second computer either, so I'm clueless. Whenever I plug it in I still recieve the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the start bar, but can't access the drive. Is memory stick fried? And if so, is there any way to recover that data that was on it (very important)? I appreciate any responses you can give. Thanks.

Did you try the flash drive manufacturer website? May be in warranty.

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

Can you see the drive in My Computer?

If so, right click - left click Properties - Tools tab - Error checking - run both options (fix errors + recover bad sectors).

I can make a guess as to what MAY have happened. If front USB port are incorrectly connected to the MBoard headers, nothing happens until a USB device is inserted. Depending on the device it may blow the USB contoller or the device. This may not be the issue at all, but it is a possibility. Front USB ports may not get used after a home assembly for some period of time and there is no way to know if they are right or wrong, except to check the wiring.

I can see the drive in My Computer, but it says "insert removable device." Every once in a while it brings up all the files for a second and disappears again. I tried to run the error checking programs but as soon and I hit run it just closes without doing anything, I'm getting very frustrated. I also tried the usb port in the back of the computer rather than the front port, but still nothing.

OK then it appears the drive is not fried. Thats good. Do you need to recover data from this jump drive? If not, why not just try and delete the partiton, recreate and format. Look for physical damage on the drive too.

I do need to recover this information badly, but it still does not work on any other machine, I tried a few recovery programs, but they also said "insert removable drive," I really don't know what it could be.

A new developement, when I restarted the computer this time, with the jump drive in, I ran scan disk, and every file that it look at said it was unreadable. I don't know what that means, but I thought I'd add it in there.

Scan the drive for a virus. If you don't have up to date virus protection, just run a google search on "free virus scan." ...FWIW, Panda would be my choice.

I scanned the drive with and updated Panda (2005) like you said, and it did find anything, didn't really scan any files either. Still stumped. Does this mean that I may have to format the jump drive?

Go to www.download.com

In the search window type data recovery software and set the drop-down window to In downloads. There you will see several utilities for data recovery, some are free to try. It appears that many have had success with a program called GetDataBack. There is one for 'FAT' and one for 'NTFS'; I assume your jump drive is formated as FAT. There may be restictions on how many files the free trials may allow for recovery, you'll have to read up on that.

Gordon,

Have you found a solution yet? I am experiencing the exact same problems with my Cruzer Mini 256 and desperately need to retrieve my files. I'd appreciate an update if you find a solution.

Thanks!
