I recently purchased a USB 2.0 External 200 Gig Maxtor HDD. Prior to purchasing and using the drive on my USB 2.0 hub I had an EPSON CX6400 printer and a Microsoft USB Explorer Trackball. Both of those devices have been working fine for about 9 or 10 months with no USB issues. Since I installed this USB 2.0 External HDD I have had repeated hard system locks where the screen and OS freezes and locks up. I have to reboot. Now some of the qualifiers for this are:
1. The lockups ONLY occur when transferring files TO the USB External HDD. I can read from the USB External HDD all day long without incident. It also seems to happen with large file transfers. Small transfers are okay it seems. And sometimes I can send large data if I am lucky but not consistently.
2. I have scanned the USB Drive for bad sectors. The Drive appears to be fine. I have checked and double checked my resource sharing and conflicts as this drive shares resources with my network card and my video card and even reconfigured my resources so that the USB card was sharing with no other devices.
3. I have checked to ensure I have the latest USB 2.0 drivers available and I do.
4. I checked my system Event Viewer to see what error I was recieving at the time the system hard locks on me. This is what I get.
Source: Service Control Manager
Category: None
Type; Error
Event ID: 7000
User: N/A
Description: The Creative Service for CDROM Access service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp
Now I am not sure if this error is because the system is frozen. I am not sure what file that it says it is missing. Sometimes I can transfer files to the USB drive and sometimes it locks up when I do.
When I successfully do a file transfer to that same USB HDD I get another event, this one says:
Source: Service Control Manager
Category: None
Type; Information
Event ID: 7035
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Description: The Remote Access Connection Manager Service was successfully sent a start control. For more information, see Help and Support center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.aspI am not sure if these 2 events have any bearing on the actual problem or not but am sending them in anyway in case they can help shed some light on this issue.
5. I took this issue to a local computer shop. BIG MISTAKE. HUGE! When I took it to him I told him the problem I was having and explained to him all that I had done already (see above) I also told him I was an advanced computer user and that I did not want him screwing around with anything just to get his opinion on what my problem might be. His answer was to install AdAware which found 65 cookies and 25 suspicious programs/registry keys (such as microsoft and mcafee. I read the log none of them were harmful and now he screwed up a few of my system settings) and send me on my way telling me the problem was fixed and that my machine seemed to be running faster. I was NOT happy. The only good thing that did come out of it was he did hook up his own external USB HDD and it locked up my system to which at least ruled out the USB Drive.
I have looked into just about everything I can think of here if anyone has any feedback or input please sound off. This is frustrating having system lock up in mid file transfer and some large file I was moving to that drive is now corrupted. If you need any additional information or specifications from me I will be glad to provide them.

BigDawg: a few random thoughts;
USB 2.0 update at:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822603
is your USB hub powered?
Run: services.msc
and start the services called: "Removeable storage" and "Smart Card".let us know what worked for you...

Thanks for the info on the update URL. I will install the update promptly.
As for my USB being powered, yes it is powered by the NEC PCI USB 2.0 Card I have installed (is this what you are asking me?)
I ran the services you suggested also. I will let you know if that seems to rectify my problems. Glad to get a reply.

A question about those services "Removable Storage" and "Smart Card" do I need to restart them each time the computer reboots? I noticed when I rebooted my machine and went in to check their status they needed to be started again. They are set for manual. Should I change them to automatic?
And I did install the update to the USB 1.1 and 2.0 drivers. I will see if I have any further system freezes.

BigDawg: yes, change the selected services to Automatic by right-clicking each entry, select Properties, change Startup type field.
while there, select the Dependencies tab and set those to Automatic as well.
the power drains on the USB port are such that you should purchase a powered USB hub to insert in the USB port.

Well, though I am thankful for all your assistance, the problem has not gone away. I updated the microsoft usb 1.1 and 2.0 drives as suggested and I made the other changes as well. Still locking up when transferring large amounts of data to the external drive.
Any other ideas?
Thanks again for all you have offered. I was hoping it would resolve the issue.

BigDawg: I have "adopted" your problem and posted it on two other forums as if it were my own problem...hope you don't mind.
Will let you know the responses as soon as I receive them.

BigDawg: first responses are:
BWeb50 said: Two things you might want to try. Make sure you have the drive plugged into a root USB connection on your machine, that is, you do not want a USB hub between the external hard drive and your machine. Some devices just don't want to cooperate when connected to your machine via a hub.
Second, if this is not the problem, do an uninstall of the drive, then reinstall. There may be a glitch from formatting the drive.

I hope this link works and you find your answer, I had problems with mine also and ended up faulty drive.

Hey Everett. Thank you for "adopting" my problem. I appreciate any and ALL help in this matter. This problem is extremely frustrating to me. This external USB Drive was meant to be a network storage drive for the 6 computers on my network here at home. Currently it is unreliable as a "write to" drive but it works fine as a read drive once I actually manage to get data successfully sent to it. Sometimes it takes me 5 or 6 attempts (each attempt requiring a full reboot of the server machine that the external USB is plugged into) to copy whatever file(s) I am trying to put on the USB drive.
I will continue to review any and all suggestions and try to figure out if any of them apply to me.
One question about the suggestion from Bweb50. How do I determine if the USB Drive is plugged into a root USB connection? The USB 2.0 PCI Card has 4 USB Ports on the card and 1 cable USB connection that feeds to a USB port on the front of the machine. I currently have the USB Drive in the far left port on the card itself so I would think it is plugged into a root connection but not knowing intimately the workings of USB I might be mistaken.
And to his having a faulty drive I wonder how he determined it was a faulty drive? Did he find bad sectors or what method did he use to make that determination? The drive does not have bad sectors. That much I can verify 3 times over. But then my next argument would be that if it was a faulty drive would it still lock up the PCI bus when the drive failed or just give me a drive write error?
Again Everett, I appreciate all your assistance. One day soon I hope to finally be rid of this problem. One thing that makes me rule out a bad drive is the fact that when I did take it to that local computer shop he did hook up another USB drive and it locked up the system with that drive as well. Then he said he even tried a different USB 2.0 card and that locked up the system.
I found a very obsure reference to something about maybe my very motherboard chipsets might be possibly the problem? But the posting I saw on that was vague and was not exactly my symptoms. Just in case my motherboard specs are:
MSI MS-6501 (v1.X) ATX Mainboard AMD-760 MPX Chipset based K7D Master series.
I have been to MSI's website and verified that I have the most up to date bios for my motherboard. If there is any of my system specs that you need or you think would be beneficial let me know and I will be glad to post them.

BigDawg,
BWeb50 uses the term root hub to mean to try plugging the Maxtor directly to the USB port on your computer (which you have effectively done already).
I still recommend trying a connection with a powered hub (which gives you more external ports) between the Maxtor and the USB port on your machine; this would require you to switch from your current configuration which is directly to the PCI card.
as for the possibility of a faulty drive,
run an error check on the external drive;
click Start, double-click My Computer,
right-click the Maxtor drive and select Properties, Tools tab, in the Error checking area; select the Check Now button,
check both disk options and Start.if you prefer to use the Command Console;
click Start, Run, type: cmd
at the command prompt type the following commands and press the Enter key after each command:
cd\
chkdsk e: /fwhere e should be changed to the drive letter assigned to the Maxtor.
DoctorD's Maxtor web site states that the maximum file size that can be transferred to a FAT32 formatted storage device is 4GB.
to backup a file larger than 4GB you must must format the storage drive as NTFS.will keep you advised of any further replies from the other forums...

Thanks for the follow-up. In my original post I stated that I had already triple checked the drive for errors. I did a through scan. It is formatted for NTFS also. I did this the very first day I had the issues when the drive had nothing on it. Then later after I had transferred several gig of data to it then again about a week later after a friend told me over and over it had to be bad sector on my external drive. So I have ruled out the bad drive and also the NTFS formatting issue. Both of those were ruled out before I ever even posted here.
As to the powered USB Hub I will look into buying one of those and giving that a try. Can't hurt at this point. I have exhausted about every other option I have been told to try. =\
Maybe I am just stuck with this particular problem using my current computer and hardware.
Once again Everett. Thanks so much for replying. If not for your time and efforts I would still be wondering about alot of potential problems. At the very least we have been able to find out what the problem is NOT! hehe. That is not a bad thing. It just narrows down the possibilities.

I've a similar problem with my 40gb Fujitsu. The difference is my pc/laptop do not get lockup, instead I receive an error message indicates that window cannot find the file and path, and the copy fails and the HDD is removed.

BigDrawg, I think I just fixed my problem. My HDD has a power supply input and also came with a power cable, I did not use it before because the other end of the cable has to plug into a ps/2 port and my laptop does not have a ps/2 port. I brought a USB to ps/2 adapter and plug the cable to a spare usb port, and I tried to copy the file that I had trouble before, and the copy finished successfully. Your problem may be related to not enough power to copy large file or folder with many files. Give it a try. Good luck.

ed: thanks for posting back with your solution; that may well help other folks.
BigDawg: received no further input yet from the other forums.
did the powered hub help?

I have EXACTLY the same problem, with the difference that it also locks even when it reads only. I noticed that you have AMD processors, just like me. I have tested also the HDD in other (intel) computers and it works flawlessly. I'm beginning to believe that it has sth to do with VIA chipset that my motherboard has... I'll try the services to start automatically, to see if anything changes, but i doubt it.

I have had the same problem with two different manufactures of usb 2.0 external hard drives. I run Windows XP and had connected directly to my usb 2.0 hub on my laptop and through an adaptec xhub 7+ 2.0 hub, and still have the same problem. My experience has been the NTFS file system through usb 2.0. Whenever I format and partition my 80 and 120 GB drives for FAT32 (partitions less than ~30 GB and file sizes less than 4GB), the drives really zip on over. However, when I reformat to NTFS (any partition size), it always slows down to a crawl, and most of the time fails to transfer. I email the external HD manufacturer and all they said was "reformat" again, and if that didn't work they would repair or replace. It didn't sound like they had ever heard of it or were denying it.
Good Luck and I'll try to follow up if I find anything.

I have had the same problem.
I found out in another forum the following reply:
- Run regedit
- go to:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E 967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
- make a backup of this key
- Delete the entry "LowerFilters"It should do the trick
Hope this Helps.Henri

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Sorry there was a space left between
4D36E and 967
ControlSet could be also found as ControlSet001Regards,
Henry

I checked that key as suggested. Here is what I found under the key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E97E-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Default : REG_SZ : Other Devices
Class: : REG_SZ : Unknown
Icon: : REG_SZ : -18Those are the only 3 listed. Is my registry entry missing something? I will wait to hear back if you have any further info on this matter. Thanks for all the responses too. This problem has been driving me to drink. I still have not gotten a powered USB Hub. Not from a lack of trying. Every time I go to get one they are sold out. But I will get one as soon as I can find one to buy. =\

BigDawg: no LowerFilters on mine either, but the other sub-keys had what appeared to be more relevant data.
my suggestion is to amend or add the following and see if it makes a difference;(Default) REG_SZ Disk drives
Class REG_SZ DiskDrive
Installer32 REG_SZ StorProp.Dll,DiskClassInstallerUpperFilters REG_MULTI_SZ PartMgr
have three more sub-keys, but try the above first and let me know if it helped...
p.s identical entries per above found in both CurrentControlSet and in ControlSet001.
