Reply: (edit) How long have you been using it - how full is it - does it need Defragging?
If it's FAT32 it will take a loooong time to Defrag! Lesley

Reply: (edit)USB 2.0 nominally runs 40 times faster than USB 1.1. 2secs multiply by 40 = 1min 20secs. Hence as suggested sounds like USB 2.0 has corrupted and your system reverted to USB 1.1 May I suggest that for XP file system is preferably NTFS

Yes - unless you use the External HDD for tranferring 'stuff' to someone else's Computer which may be FAT32 Lesley

Reply: (edit)Have you installed any new software recently? Maybe your antivirus software is scanning the drive upon access? Try checking the drive for errors as well (right-click on the drive from within My Computer to access the tools)...
