Comment: hey you all! i'm having problems with my maxtor 3200 USB hard drive. it takes a long time to open when i right click on it. then when it does,i click on either-name-album-artist,to arrange the files.the computer stops responding for about 1 to 2 mins. according to the Task Manager, then it starts working again. sometimes i can't safely remove it. it won't let me. i did a check disk on it,everything o.k. i defrag the usb drive also. i check the device manager no problems there. it is a NTFS system. this is a brand new computer. anybody got any ideals!

Reply: (edit)Check your log files and see what they show! start > control panel > admin tools > viewer> check all three log files and see if anything shows up. more than likely it is going to be a security issue. Some program is blocking it or scanning it or it could just be a bad external drive (either the drive or the case) In The Matters Of Style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, Stand Like A Rock "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

Reply: (edit)Try the USB HDD on another computer and see if you experience the same or different behavior.

Reply: (edit)Get a drive test program from Maxtor and run it on the drive. Extreme access times can be caused by drives with bad sectors, but still can be read until they fail completely. I replace lots of Maxtor drives (not my current favorite brand) frequently for bad sectors. Richard
