Subject: USB Flash Drive Not RecognizedOS: Win XP HomeCPU/Ram: 512kb |
Comment: I just bought SanDisk Cruzer Micro. However, when I plug it in the removable disk does not show up in My Computer. It also has a message in the systray that says I am not running at hi-speed. I've tried finding a driver to get me to USB 2.0, but they haven't worked. Windows Update is not recognizing that I need one. My new USB external hard drive is also not being recognized. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Are the USB ports in your computer USB 2.0. Besides the driver you need USB 2.0 hardware. A USB 2 driver alone will not do it. If they are USB 2 then all the USB 2 drivers should be installed with Windows XP. You may also need a the manufactures driver for the external drives. Stuart

Reply: (edit)I guess I don't have USB 2.0 drives. It's a HP pavillion ze5200 laptop. Is there a way to add them to my computer? Will a USB 2.0 hub connected into a USB 1.1 port give me the 2.0 speed?

Reply: (edit)you do not need to find any drivers for XP, they dont make any...The USB drivers are built into XP SP1 & SP2 - and as far as i know, no plugging a USB 2.0 hub into a USB 1.1 plug will not give you faster rates ... if you absolutely need USB 2.0 you may be able to find a PCMCIA card that has USB 2.0 on it... yup!

Reply: (edit)sometimes if you have multiple partitions and drives (any thing given a letter designation) and it reaches to drive "H" or higher then XP sometimes refuses to include the drive to be seen in "my computer" The only work around that I have seen for this is to re letter your optical drives to the end of the alphebet as in X...Y...or ..Z which will normally clear the slate so xp will allow the flash drive to be seen. Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem described above. If you go to Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management you will probably find it is there - it just doest show up in Windows Explorere. The way I got round it was to load Internet Explorer and select the drive manually in the address bar. This then forced it to be displayed in Windows Explorer and has been fine since. Stuart

Reply: (edit)I was able to access it through disk management and typing manually typing it. However it transfers at the speed of a floppy. I guess I'll have to get one of those PCMCIA USB cards.
