Comment:

All of a sudden, none of my USB devices stopped working on Windows XP (SP1).

I have 2 USB ports. I am not sure whether it is USB 1.1 or USB 2.

Device manager shows that the USB hubs and controllers are working fine. I tried to download as many patches as I thought would be applicable to this problem from microsoft site, but no luck.

Any suggestions? I can go step-by-step all over again to install the patches etc.

I assume you mean none of them are working.

If they (not the USB hubs) appear in Device Manager, delete them and try reinstalling.

I'm with BurrWalnut. Sometimes the easiest fix is to delete everything related to USB, then reboot and let XP reinstall the drivers. Good luck.

SP1 strikes again, try this it worked for me

Upgrading to USB 2.0 EHCI Host Controller
If you have a computer that supports USB 2.0, and if you have a preinstalled USB 2.0 driver
from the OEM, you continue to use the earlier preinstalled drivers for USB 2.0 even after
you install SP1.

To upgrade to the USB 2.0 enhanced host controller driver in Windows XP SP1, follow these steps:

Make sure that Windows XP SP1 is installed, and that you have restarted your computer
(if requested). For more information about Windows XP SP1, visit the following Microsoft
Web site:
Microsoft Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/

Open Device Manager and view Devices by Type.

To open Device Manager, either run devmgmt.msc from a command prompt, or follow these steps:
Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
Expand System Tools, click Device Manager, and then click Devices by type on the View menu.
Right-click the USB 2.0 EHCI Host controller, and then click Update Driver.

You can find the USB Host controller entry under either of the following locations:
Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Other Devices, where it will be labeled as Universal Serial Bus controller with a yellow
exclamation mark next to it.

Click Install the software automatically (Recommended), and then click Next.
Click Finish when installation is complete. You may be prompted to restart your computer
to finish the installation.

Confirming Driver Versions
To confirm that you have the latest USB 2.0 drivers from Windows XP SP1, make sure that
you have the following (or later) driver versions:
Date Version File name
29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 Usbport.sys
29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 Usbhub.sys
29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 Hccoin.dll
29-Aug-2002 5.1.2600.1106 Usbehci.sys
