USB devices hangs XP but not Linux

August 25, 2009 at 17:01:26
Specs: XP Pro srv pk 2, Dual PIII500
Trying to fix someones pc, which they upgraded the OS from W98 to Xp Pro SP2.

Whenever I plug in a USB device in any port, it hangs XP. Just freezes and have to reboot by pressing switch on case.

In linux DSL, mounting USB devices are fine and works as normal so that rules out hardware. Unless the PSU is only failing in XP.

Mobo is a MSI MS-6309

Have tried:
* Uninstalling any USB related items in Device Manager, both in Safe Mode and Normal. No yellow exclamation marks.
* Installed the VIA 4in1.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Edit: Also hangs in Bart-PE.

Bill

Look at the event viewer.

You can also try to reset the BIOS to defaults.

Seem to have fixed it by going into safe mode, uninstalling all usb peripherals, hubs and hosts. Reboot to normal. Let it reinstall. Reboot again. Works now. Hope it lasts!

@Guapo: There were no entries in the event log, it seemed to freeze before Xp could do anything!

The event viewer doesn't always have what you're looking for but it's always worth a look. At least it's working now.
