Comment:

A short while ago I installed a USB Mini TV Capture device and in the process of installing it asked to update my USB controllers to those which it had on the install disk. I allowed it to do this and the install continued.

I found that when I came to use the thing I got an error alert telling me that the command had failed and did I want to advise Microsoft (I never). I tried uninstalling and a registry check and installed again. Once again I was asked to update the controllers even though they had been updated earlier. I stiil had no success with the unit and in desperation I scrapped the idea and uninstalled.

Now I wonder whether my controllers have been compromised and will it do damage if I re-install SP2 which carry the most up to date controllers... I think (?)

All suggestions will be appreciated,

Regards.

First off USB controllers are "hardware" and not "software". These are built into your motherboard or a USB add-on card installed to your computer.

You update the driver files.

The program may have requested you to update the drivers and installed what it believed to be the latest version...The problem with that is the latest version is best to be gotten from the manufacturer of the hardware itself. Go to the manufacturer of your computer and look for the latest USB contrller drivers or motherboard drivers to download. If they don't have any then it is a good chance that there just isn't any.

If the USB devices you have installed onto your computer are working properly (other than the camera) then it should be safe to say that there was no harm done.

Try to install it without allowing it to update the drivers!

May I ask what specific product? And about the installation process, did you try to decline the USB controller update? And if you tried to decline, did the installation process moved on?

Thank you lurkswithin... I should have said "drivers", it's all in the terminology and I erred. All my other USB devices work as they always did viz: USB external drives, modem, scanner and printer. However I will follow your advice and visit the M/board site and see what is available.

Jared... the unit involved is an "In-Vision USB2.0 TV Tuner" from AVLabs. I actually installed three times. The first time I declined and the install completed but I got the error. I thought perhaps the drivers were a neccessity so on the second and third install I installed them with the same error result.

I'll call on the board site and report back with my findings.

Thank you both for your input.

EDIT (11.10pm AEST)

I found the DFI site and apart from a BIOS update I could find no USB driver updates. Thanks again.

I would reinstall your mobos oem smbus or
chipset drivers. some usb devices will
install there own smbus driver and cause
problems.
