Upgraded from Win 98SE to XP on my AMD Duron 909 Mhz) and then tried to install Lexmark all in one to USB port. Under my System the USB Universal and USB root hub are listed though when I was able to install the Lexmark with their disc it never showed under USB - it did show up in Printers folder but print jobs would always go to pause with a message about connection problems. Returned another scanner thinking it was the problem, tried another USB cord. Worked with tech support at Microsoft, XP never noted New Hardware or saw Printer. Under BIOs there is no Legacy, no USB listed and suggestion was to upgrade my motherboard(GA71XE4)from gigabyte site which may fix the problem..or not. I'm no expert here - I don't understand how Windows can have it under systems unless its installed somewhere-can it be in another place than the motherboard? 2USb ports are in back and this would be the only device on it.
I'm not sure about upgrading the BIOS, might cause other problems. I'm wondering if I should try that, ditch XP and go back to 98, or maybe a self-powered USB hub would be easiest? Also have all patches, etc from the Update list.

This will always cause some issues and conflicts....the best way to go is a fresh install of Xp
Backup all your important data and do a fresh install, you will have more fun with Xp then....

It's not windows, It's Lexmark. I have an x73 and had so many Usb communications problems I just put that POS on the closet shelf and left it there. Getting the latest drivers from Lexmark did not help. And the files are grossly large to boot and take forever to download. I did gleen one thing from anothe forum thought that might help. If the Lexmark device is not plugged into USB PORT 0 it will give you fits. Try that.

Just had another thought. If you had the usb cable plugged in when you BEGAN the driver install it will mess up the usb driver install. If this is what you did uninstall the drivers and start over. It should warn you if you're plugged in to unplug. Then somewhere along the way it will tell you to plug in the cable. Lexmark is very much a pain. Poorly written software and expensive ink carts.

Thanks for the advice - I did do the uninstall/reinstall, the drivers were there which is why I'm not sure its the Lexmark - had the same problem with an HP 1200 series, after talking with HP's tech for an hour and doing the scrub before reinstalling I was told either the USB ports weren't working on my computer, I didn't have enough power or it might be the unit. I got fed up and returned it. That's what made me think it could be the XP. I really didn't want to go with Lexmark - I agree the ink cartridges are outrageous- that HP and Lexmark 5150 were the only 2 models they had in my price range with the features I needed.

To Alan - thanks Alan, I'll keep that in mind, maybe that would be the easiest way to go. For a simple plug and play this has gotten to be a royal headache.
