Comment:

I have encountered the most bizarre USB problem ever. The motherboard in question is an Asus A7V8X-X with the latest bios (1013) and latest 4-in-1 drivers (4.99, I believe). When booting into Windows XP SP2, once on the Windows logo screen with the blue scrolling bar, the keyboard lights flash like normal and so does the floppy drive. However, afterwards, it'll stay on the logo screen for about another 2 minutes before it actually goes to the logon screen.

Now, the reason I know this is related to the USB ports is that if I unplug the mouse it'll boot no problem. Also, once booted, I can install the USB printer, an HP OfficeJet V40xi, and it'll install fine and print fine, BUT, upon rebooting, the logo screen now takes 4 minutes (unless all USB devices are unplugged) and once booted, the printer will show the error:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)"

It doesn't matter which ports I'm using (ones on the back or ones on the front), it happens with all of them.

I've spent the last five hours trying everything I can think of (various drivers, uninstalling all host controllers, changing bios settings, etc) and NOTHING seems to make a bit of difference. The only thing I can think of that I've changed recently is an upgrade to SP2 (I've tried uninstalling it but it won't for some reason; gives the error "access denied"). Please, I'm absolutely baffled and desperate at this point -- please help me!!

Try going to bios and disable "USB Boot" option.

If you haven't, you MUST follow the instructions from HP for installing their printer. If not done right, it could cause problems.

You can also try uninstalling all USB devices, then uninstall the USB controllers and root hubs (root hubs first) and let Windows reinstall USB controllers and root hubs with JUST the mouse plugged in.

I've tried using the HP drivers and it makes no difference. The problem isn't with any particular USB device, it's with the motherboard itself.

Ok, the only i can suggest now is try to use the PS/2 port. Since your mouse is USB, buy a USB to PS/2 adapter.

You can get it about 3 bucks in ebay or other place.
