Usb 2.0?

i'm so confused about usb 2.0, seeing as i have a computer from '01 that doesn't have it. can i upgrade to it? buy an adapter? do i need an entirely new computer? i just bought an external hard drive and it's a pain to wait nine hours just to transfer 30gb.
