Comment:

I'm trying to update my USB ports to USB 2.0.
I haven't been able to find out if a motherboard needs to support USB 2.0 or if it is a drivers issue.

My motherboard is:
SOYO P4VDA
Chipset = VIA VT8753A Apollo P4X266A
There are numerous USB ports (6 I think)
I have tried the MoBo drivers cd and there is a USB folder with a setup.exe but only supports WIN ME & 2000. I have an external
USB 2.0 HDD that I am trying to use at the higher data transfer rate. I have tried to update the driver in the device manager and it finds nothing.
I really would like to know first if the motherboard has to support USB 2.0 before trying any other options.Nothing was referenced to high speed ,turbo,or max in the BIOS setup with respect to USB. Just the ability to enable or disable the ports.
Last issue is I use WinXP SP2.
There is alot of talk on the net about this service pack and USB Highspeed.

Hope you guys/gals can help.
TIA
DJMike

Well if I am understanding your question correctly I think you are under the assumption that the difference between traditional USB and USB 2.0 is just a driver. This is not the case. To have USB 2.0 means that you actually have a USB 2.0 card (hardware) in your machine. If the USB ports on your m/b are traditional USB than you can't update the drivers to make them USB 2.0. You have to go buy a new USB 2.0 Card and install it in your box.

Hope that helps.

USB 2.0 PCI cards are cheap and available. I got mine at Staples. I prefer cards with an NEC chipset.

djmike,

Open Device Manager (hit ΓΏ+Pause/Break keys together then click on Device Manager tab). Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers. If you do not see USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller listed, this means your mobo only have USB1.0 or USB1.1 ports. You may need to purchase the PCI card suggested by others.

Badboy,

If your mobo came with built-in USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 ports, did you have to disable them through BIOS when you installed the PCI card?

No. The USB 1.0 and USB 1.1 ports continue to function along with the USB 2.0 ports.

Interesting...no conflicts at all? How many USB ports do you have altogether?

I have 4 USB 1.0 and 3 USB 2.0 ports. There are no conflicts.
