I have a USB 2.0 external hard drive. My computer is supposed to be equipped with USB 2.0 ports. However, when I plug my USB 2.0 drive into a port I get the message “A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub” and I have clocked the data transfer speed and have confirmed that it is transferring at the sloooower speed. Everything does seem to work and I was able to format the drive and save data to it, but the speed is not where it should be.

In Device manager (devices by type) it says that I have the following

Universal Serial Bus controllers
USB 2.0 root hub
USB mass storage device
USB root hub
USB root hub
USB root hub
VIA rev 5 or later USB universal host controller
VIA rev 5 or later USB universal host controller
VIA rev 5 or later USB universal host controller
VIA USB 2.0 enhanced host controller

Each device indicates: “This device is working properly.”
I have tried to update each hub or controller and it tells me that each has the best driver.
From the list above it appears that I have USB 2.0 capability but somehow my drive is choosing the slower transfer rate of USB 1.1. Also, another puzzling thing to me is when I look a the Power section in the properties of the USB 2.0 root hub it tells me there is 6 ports available. What? I only have 4 ports on my computer (2 front and 2 rear). I hope someone can clear this up because I sure would like to utilize the faster speed. Thanks in advance.

Have you Installed SP1 ?

Wihtout SP1 XP does not support USB 2.0

I think that's right but I do remember some discussion about this on the Forum

Lesley-- Remember my post re USB 2.0? I think that's what you're referring to. I'm running an external drive enclosure with HD on a USB 2.0 PCI card. No SP1 installed. Only thing SP1 has are USB drivers. As long as you install manufacturers drivers for USB 2.0 you're good to go. I think OZ is correct, hopefully Robert's restore system CD has the drivers, though, or he'll be hurting without SP1.

Thanks To All For You Responses.

Problem is fixed...

2 rear ports handled USB 1.1 and USB 2.0

2 front ports (which is where I was plugged in) handle usb 1.1 only.

Thanks
