Comment:

I run a computer just for editing video (which can't be connected to the internet) but USB 2 support would be VERY useful. How can I get this without installing service packs?

Please don't suggest other ways of getting the service packs on, as I don't want/need the extra security issues since it is only used for video editing. Surely there's a generic driver or something requestable from motherboard manufacturers or something??

USB 2.0 support requires SP2........no alternative, unless you swap to Linux

It depends. When my motherboard came out there was no SP1 or SP2. Instead the drivers were included on the driver CD. Check the disck that came with your motherboard or USB card or check the manufacturer's website. However, because USB is natively supported in XP SP2 some manufacturers might not include the drivers on the CD and may not even go to the trouble of creating them in the first place.

I don't know what you aversion is to installing SP2, but it is probably unwarranted. It contains much more than just security updates and some current applications will not run without it. The only people I know of who are afraid to install a patch are the ones who don't back up.

I got mine from here

http://www.soyo.com.tw/dl/drivers/usb20/

I have used the one below and it worked on all the XP machines I have tried without installing any service packs, hence why I uploaded it for easy access.

Good Luck.

Thanks for going to that effort clover, but after installing I didn't notice any difference so uninstalled it. But you seem to be showing that you DON'T need service packs for usb 2 despite what plainandsimple says. So how would I got about finding the drivers that will work for me?

Yeah I'd read all those, which as you say, require service pack 1, but clover says he has installed usb 2 drivers without any service packs, this is all I'm trying to do and it appears to be possible. I just need to find out how.

Read clover's post (#3) again. He provided for you the URL to download what works for him.

The drivers I have must be VIA based.I have xp home Version 2600,2002 installed with no service packs and they work for me.

It is possible you may be on an intel based board so you need to download intel based drivers.

You need to find out what board you have to determine what drivers you need.

That's my motherboard, and I have an AMD processor if that's relevant. Does that help?

I still don't understand WHY you're so reluctant to install the SP's. M$ created SP1 to FIX the problem you are experiencing.

Because, as I said earlier, the computer I need it on cannot be connected to the internet and I want as little extra things on it as possible, since it is used only for video editing.

From the instructions for that:

'1.Please Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or later'

But thanks alot for finding it anyway. I'm near accepting defeat. Looks like I'm just going to have to find something to do whenever I've got something big to transfer over usb.

Well to mind here's the simple fix, you download the SP2 with another computer, you then burn SP2 to cdr with that computer.

Service Pack 2 Download

You then install SP2 to the computer without internet access. Then you will have your USB 2.0 drivers.

Easy...

Well I finally gave in and installed service pack 2, and checking device manager it shows 'enhanced usb...' (apparantly meaning you have usb 2) BUT my usb 2 memory stick transfers at the same speed that it used to! Is there any way of testing if I DO actually have it or not or something I've missed??

As in it transfers at the same speed it did on standard USB (not USB 2), if it's faster, it's almost not noticeable, DEFINATELY not 40 times faster! But it says 'enhanced' in device manager so I don't know what's wrong.
