I recently bought a new pc with Windows xp
pre-installed. My only problem is that it
doesn't properly recognize my old external
US Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem. It thinks
it's the Sportster instead, and connects
at about half speed. I have been unable
to find a driver for this modem which
supports xp. Does anyone know where to
find one? Also, unless I turn on the modem BEFORE
booting windows, it lists the modem as
"not present", until I manually run the
add new hardware wizard. How do I get xp
to recognize the modem when I turn it on
(was never a problem in windows 98).Thanks in advance
Vera

Hi Vera.
On US Robotics website it says Windows XP has basic compatibility built in.

Have you used Windows Update?
When you use Windows Update, Windows reviews your system and tells you if they have an improved driver or XP fix for any of your components. They give you a list and you can choose the items you want to update.
They also have critical Windows XP files that came out after the CDs were released to the stores.
You download the updates and they install automatically.
Maybe they have an updated driver for your modem.
Since your modem is an external one, have it plugged in and turned on when you run Windows Update.
Start
Control Panelupper left of screen - Windows Update
Take care,Callisto

Hi again.
Ignore the part about having the modem plugged in and turned on when you do Windows Update since to be online it would be turned on. :)
I caught that after I posted.
Take care,
Callisto

I have the same problem with my Sportster x2 56K when running under Windows XP. I've been using it with Win2K and Win ME with no problem.
A quote:
On Win 2K and ME, I use that driver named "Standard 56000 bps V.90 modem" which is not listed in Win XP.
I can't even start Windows Update.
Could any1 help me?
Thanks in advance.
Anyone could help me?
