When opening IE 7, attempting a system restore or other functions XP displays the following message (for IE) "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close ...."
Checking the event viewer it display Event ID: 1000
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.16512, faulting module urlmon.dllI ran a check disk (no errors) and re-registered the urlmon.dll (and others)to try to solve the problem. I have not run the sfc.exe because HP only provides restore disk (and a recovery partition). Can anyone help me solve this issue other than restoring the hard drive to it's original settings using the recovery partition?

IE7 Beta version used to exhibit users problem with urlmon.dll. If you are not running beta version you need to call M$ for the fix outlined in the following documentation
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...
Updated: M$ changed its mind and is now saying you can e-mail them for the fix instead of call them. More info available HERE

See if things work when you are in Windows Safe-Mode. If they do, then your problem is somewhere else. Then try this to find cause --

How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XPIf not, then download a replacement DLL file from
http://www.dll-files.com/Then place it in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Thank you for the responses.
The urlmon.dll problem is not just limited to IE 7. It impacts other applications such as Outlook, trying to perform a system restore. McAfee updates, iTunes updates, AIM etc.
Tried Safe Mode - same error
Tried Clean Boot - same errorConsidered downloading the urlmon.dll but when I compared versions and file size, I decided not use the one from dll-files website.
version/size from dll-files 5.0.2614.3500/436 KB
version on my pc: 7.0.6000.16512/1.09 MBAlso, I believe that Windows XP has a file protection service that runs that stores dll, sys, exe, ocx in %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache which would prevent me from downloading and placing in the system32 directory.
I noticed that there were 5 Windows updates and 2 IE 7 updates on Aug 15, 2007. My other thought was to remove these updates to see if it would correct the problem. I also could uninstall IE 7 and go back to IE 6. If everything works, try the updates again.

I believe the problem is resolved.
Below is what I did:
I noticed in the eventvwr was giving errors Event ID 1517. So I installed uphclean
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...Checking the eventvwr after installing uphclean told me that Nero was causing problems. So I uninstalled Nero.
No luck. IE, Outlook, System Restore etc were still broken.
I started removing Windows XP Software Updates starting with the latests updates 8/31 and all of the 8/15 ones. I new IE was working before 8/15. No luck (many reboots). IE, Outlook, System Restore etc were still broken.
I started removing Windows Internet Explorer 7 updates starting with the latest.
I found the culprit:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB937143)http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...
After removing this update IE7, AIM, Outlook, System Restore all seem to work!!!
I turned off Windows Updates.... Should I turn it back on???

Never mind. Even though I turned off updates via the control panel, it applied them all again.
Everything is working and this thread can be closed.
