Hey everyone. I wanted to install xp over my 2000, and so i loaded everything up installed everything and then got to the partition selection. It would not let me delete C: because it said there were files that were needed for the setup, arent they supposed to be on the disk? So it couldnt delete, but i continued and installed it on that partition (C: ) thinking that after words it will ask me to format. IT didnt.. and i now have 2000 and XP installed and i dont wanna multiboot. I tried going run the format c:, but it wouldnt let me heres wat it said:
Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. WOuld you like to force a dismount on this volume
y/n. If put y or n it just closes either way. What do i do??? Im new this. This was going to be the first time id reformat. I only want one windows help pleaes !

Sounds like you are doing an upgrade. You need to boot from the xp cd and follow the install instructions.

Are you getting a multiboot menu before windows loads?

If you are, what you simply need to do is edit your boot.ini and then delete the applicable OS (WIN2K) directory.

Boot from the Windows XP CD as per suggested. From there you can do anything you want.

Unless you boot from the Windows XP you are going to be chasing yourself round in ever decreasing circles until you get to the stage where nothing will work.

Manic,
Are you actually booting from the CD, or simply running the CD while you're booted into Win2000?

Earilier the first thing i did was, load up the xp cd on 2k. It installed everything, then restarted and i got to the point where it asked me all the technical questions, i.e what partition do you want etc..But i dont know how to boot from cd. And please dont tell me BIOS settings. I dont get that. I tried doing this as well:
While starting up computer(xp cd in tray) I press del and it gave met he BIOS SEtTINGS UTILITY. I went to BOOT. Then boot priority and changed [1stfloppydisc] to second and made changed my HL-DT-SC and there was some more info, to the top one, i dno if i have to put 1st beside its name, and i think that that is my cd drive. Man im just so confused, i read a help page and it said to go to BIOS settings and go to "BOot Order" Then make CD-ROM first, i dont have any of that.

Whatever you are doing you are not booting from the CD. After booting from the CD you can clean the disk off completely - put it back into the state it was when it came out of the factory. The CD has a cut down version of XP on it to allow you do these things and does not not require any files to be written to the hard disk.

Take note of what Sci-Guy is telling you. I suspect that is what you are doing. *DO NOT* load Windows 2000.

Go onto the BIOS. Check that the CD-Rom is the first boot device, floppy second and hard disk third.

Put the CD in the drive an re-boot. You will get a massage to press any key to boot from CD. Tap the space bar and you are in. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Assuming your CD-rom is an LG, then "HL-DT-SC" should be set as first item in the boot order. It sounds like you've done this much. Restart the machine with the XP CD in the tray. Watch the screen as it boots up. You only have about an 8 second opportunity to boot from the CD. You'll see a message at the bottom of the screen, "Press Any Key To Boot From CD". It's easy to miss this message if you do not watch for it.

Note: If this is not a genuine XP CD, it may not be bootable.

If you manage to boot from the CD, do not choose the "Repair Console" option. Bypass this option and continue on to the install options.

You get into the BIOS by pressing a key or key combination as soon as the initial screen appears. It will probably tell you on the bottom of the screen which key to press.

F1, F2, Del, Ctrl-Alt-S

Press the key(s) and keep tapping them till the BIOS setup menu appears. Again you have to be quick as it is easy to miss it and continue to boot as normal.

When you finally manage to enter BIOS and change the boot order to CD-ROM (it may call it ATAPI device), don't forget to save the changes before exiting BIOS.

Manic,
It sounds like you have an incomplete install on C:\. To remove it, you'll have to boot into Win2000. On your C:\ drive, you'll have two directories (Windows & WINNT) you'll have to determine which one contains the XP files and delete it. You should then be able to boot from the CD and format the partition.

Manic,
You can delete the entire Windows (or WINNT) directory. The directory for XP will have a lot less files than the one for 2000. Based on your last post, I'd say it would be the Windows directory.

Yes if yours a Full Installation CD and you format the HD first - its never good to install XP on top of earlier OS.

48 responses WOAH!, just in the blink of an eye. Initially this issue was as simple as editing boot.ini and deleting the errant windows directory, but that is not path you chose to follow so now you may need to wipe all partitions and go from there.

IMO It is unnecessary to wipe the drive since you are able to load at windows XP, but if can no longer do that then my advice is to FDISK the drive and the load windows XP.

Manic … Boot up your computer and tap the delete key until you see the bios screen , Once there go to the "Boot" tab , Now you should see " Boot Devise Priority " and its probably in white lettering , If so just click enter on your keyboard , Now you should see the boot order , The first one should be already highlighted in white again , just click enter again and now set the order to your cd rom by using your up and down arrow keys, Once you have the cd rom selected just click enter , Once that is done just click the F10 key , Now next what will show up is “ok” highlighted in black , just click the enter key again , Now you have set the bios screen correctly … Now take a look at this website for Step-by-Step: Clean installing Windows XP

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

Once you have read this article , give it a try … Take a look a step number 5 at this point you should notice your operating system that is install on your computer at the moment , just do the delete option for all your partition , If you only see just the c drive then just delete this drive and then afterward recreate a new c drive partition , once you recreate it , its going to ask how much space you want to set for the new c drive partition , If I was you just click the whole amount by clicking the enter key and the way you go in installing your Windows xp
