I am asking for a friend!!! I friend of mine who does a lot of traveling with thier 3 year old triplets bought a laptop with a 14" monitor and DVD instead of an 8.5" DVD player, but want to mount the laptop upside down. Is it possible for the DVD to play upside down, and if so is there any way to have the laptop show the image upside down?

To my knowledge there isn't a way of inverting the image from within Windows Media Player or other DVD playback applications.
If your friend is skilled, then thy may be able to remove the Display from the case and see if it can be rotated 180 degrees.
They may need to fabricate some cable looms to allow the wires to reach the extended distance having moved around the frame.

My video card [and the software it comes with] allows me to rotate the display.
To be honest i dont know if its the hardware or software that makes this possible.
You could check.. right click empty space on desktop/properties/settings/advanced and see if you have a rotation tab. Heres a screen shot of mine adapt.gif. Yours might have something different.
Also.. You could contact the support line for her PC and see if they have an answer.

Adding.. the rotation thing rotates the whole desktop not just the dvd player.
Im pretty sure Brian is correct that you cant just flip media player or dvd playback software unless its a specific feature. I personally have never heard of it but anythings possible.
About the dvd playing upside down.. If your asking about the disk being read while the pc is upside down.. It should work, especially in a notebook. Depends on how the drive grabs the disk i guess. You might try it with an audio cd [burned] first incase it gets damaged.

he should have just gotten a tv for his van (i'm assuming this is what it's for).
anyway, update your drivers and see if they will give you the ability to rotate your screen. The dvd should be able to play upside down, depending on how it grabs the cd. I know for my laptop, i actually have to yank the cd out with a bit of force.

if you got the subtitle sign (a green arrow) in the system tray, there should be an option to flip the movie.

the dvd will probably NOT play upsdie down. Check for clips on the edges of the dvd tray. most trays will allow use on the side but the disc will fall out if upside down (hence the disc does not actually 'clip' past the tabs, but rest in them when on the side). Your best bet for rotating ht edisplay would be if you can find some software to do it.

Hey, thanks everyone for your helpful answers.
I am the friend that Jeff posted for.
To address the TV/laptop question. Yes, I could have purchased a TV and DVD for the vehicle, but couldn't figure out mounting since thats a considerable amount of weight. Not to mention safety issues of a xxlb tv vs a 6 lbs laptop in an accident. Also, I can't CENTER mount anything because this would mean that one of the two babies in the back row would have their view blocked by the carseat in front of them. Most portable DVD players and car systems are geared towards ONE kid or maybe even two, but not three unless I wanted to sink 1500 into the system that allowed expansion with additional monitors that mounted to the back of the seat in front of the viewer. Not to mention these screens are very small, so angling them isn't an option.
In addition I needed a laptop for business while I travel.
I thought it would be nice if I could get a small case mounted to the ceiling of the Suburban so I could slide the laptop into the case and lock it into place with the display hanging upside down. The DVD player in my laptop does indeed have a center locking clip similiar to the clips in the DVD cases, so it will playupside down.
I did indeed mean flipping the entire display not just the DVD window.
I did have rotational capabilities on one of the video cards that I have purchased in the past, in fact, it was an ATI Rage video card, and the screenshot provided by Shutmeupordown was very similiar to the controls for the video card that I had.
Having said all that.... Does anyone know if there are after-market display software program that might contain this feature? The Laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite 1115.

Triplets,
I havent seen any software like that. I assume the video card is the issue but the only way to tell is to contact the manufacturer or try it out if you already have the unit. Also.. you could ask at a pc shop.
My dell notebook has an ati card & software and it also lets me rotate the display.

S.M.U.O.D.
Thanks, I placed a message on the bulletin board at Toshiba, I'll see what responses I get.
Thanks to everyone for their insight!
