two matched single gig sticks to keep your dual channel capabilities

looking at your board i would suggest that you use two matched pairs of DDR 400 (DDR PC3200) in dual config and leave your other RAM slot spare hope this helps

There is no real advantage to using dual channel with K7 boards. Unlike the Athlon64 series the 32bit chips can't outrun the availble RAM in single channel. Go the cheapest way. Go for the 3GB.

Have you checked the system specs to see if that rig is Vista capable? Why are you doing that anyway, if you don't mind my asking?

that was my inital thought but i was wondering if 2xddr400 would run faster.

"Have you checked the system specs to see if that rig is Vista capable?"
yes it is.

lol I'm not really sure if i will.........just seemed a good comment to avoid people banging back with "why do you need more memory" Rather that answering my question.
do i have to take into consideration the 200/266/333 of the ram, not sure what it means. would i have to go for the 200MHz to match my current setup

If I understand your situation you currently have 2x512 PC3200 and want to add more RAM. Board specs limit you to 2 sticks of PC3200. Installing more RAM will downgrade the speed of the current RAM. Normally not that big a deal if you need more RAM to run your progs. However I just noticed that you are evidently overclocking a mobile chip. In order to continue overclocking you need to stay with the DDR400 RAM. Your specs say you can only run 2 chips at 400 so if you wish to keep the overclock you would need to replace the 2x512 DDR400 with 2x1GB DDR400. I personally don't see the cost efectiveness in doing that.

You ask what you should do for maximum performance. What are you using the rig for? You may be able to push the CPU to higher speeds. If you are running something that needs RAM try conserving RAM by going vanilla with the setup. Below is a list of PC3200 dual channel RAM at Newegg.com. The prices run $100/150. Your call but I wouldn't invest that much in that rig.
