Upgrading Win98 SE to XP Professional

October 24, 2009 at 12:00:47
Specs: Windows 2000
I cloned the Win98 drive onto a much larger drive. Then I tried the upgrade on the XP cd-rom. During the upgrade, I get these messages:

Error: Setup cannot copy M:\I386\mfc42.dll to C:\WINDOWS\setup\mfc42.dll

Error: Setup cannot copy M:\I386\migisol.exe to C:\WINDOWSmigisol.exe\setup\

I verified that these two files ARE on the XP installation disk.

Then, I copied the entire XP installation CD-ROM onto a folder on the new, large (160 GB) hard drive, and tried the installation from the hard drive. The same error messages appeared.

Finally, this message appeared:

Fatal Error: Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical Support (Error: 5BAFF5C?h)

I was not willing to pay the $49 charge for emailing Microsoft Tech Support.

Please help.

Do NOT upgrade. Get Win98 off that machine. Boot off the XP CD, delete all partitions, then recreate them. Format as NTFS...do the full format, not the quick format. At some point during the installation you'll be prompted for proof of a previous OS. Eject the XP CD & insert the 98 CD...if it doesn't recognize it automatically, browse to the win98 folder. Once you get the OK, remove the 98 CD & reinsert the XP CD & continue with the install.

BTW, if you don't have at least 512MB RAM, XP will run like sh!t.
