I am trying to upgrade a Pentium 4 (Northwood) 2.6GHz 478 socket to a P4 Prescott 3.0GHz. When I try to boot pc just displays black screen and will not shut down w/power button. Any one know what I can do to make this chip work in the pc?

Then why does your signature list Biostart? Did you check Gateway's site?

That Gateway comes in 3 different processors,
1.8 / 2.6 / and 3.0 .. You might be able to upgrade to the 3.0... Hard to find info on it.
Since eMachine and Gateway are of the same mold, You should be able to do it...
Can you access your bios ? Does is have a place where you can overclock it ?

Prescott's are generally socket 775, as a result there is no way to make that style CPU fit a socket 478 board. No BIOS update or other tweaks will get around that.
