I am trying to upgrade a Pentium 4 (Northwood) 2.6GHz 478 socket to a P4 Prescott 3.0GHz. When I try to boot pc just displays black screen and will not shut down w/power button. Any one know what I can do to make this chip work in the pc?
Gateway 500XL
S/N: 0031920899BIOSTAR G965 Micro 775
Pentium 4 3.6GHz
Crucial Ballistix 2GB 800
Geforce 8600 GT

the info i have found on my mobo would suggest that it would support the faster processor.

Did you look here?

Then why does your signature list Biostart? Did you check Gateway's site?

That Gateway comes in 3 different processors,
1.8 / 2.6 / and 3.0 .. You might be able to upgrade to the 3.0... Hard to find info on it.
Since eMachine and Gateway are of the same mold, You should be able to do it...
Can you access your bios ? Does is have a place where you can overclock it ?

I checked gateways site, i did notice there was a bios update but its not my pc and not sure if i want to chance it. And I'm not sure if that will solve my problem.
Sorry, my sig is my rig specs.

Prescott's are generally socket 775, as a result there is no way to make that style CPU fit a socket 478 board. No BIOS update or other tweaks will get around that.

Check out this link before you invest in the P4 Prescott/478.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.
