Subject: UPGRADE: XP Home SP2 to XP Pro SP1OS: Win XP Home SP2CPU/Ram: AMD, 512mb |
Comment: Hi, I recently purchased a new laptop that comes preinstalled with winxp home with sp2 on it. I also happen to have a version of win xp pro with just sp1 on it, and I wish to upgrade the home version to the pro version, however, will I run into problems since the xp pro edition does not have sp2 whereas the home edition does? What's the suggestion?

Reply: (edit)Roger that - you will have to do a new install of the XP Pro. Rule #1 Good computers don't go down. Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

Reply: (edit)Since you already have the XP CD go here and order the SP2 CD. It is free and MS also pays the postage. As stated above forget the upgrade and go to a complete new install.

Reply: (edit)Hello. You did not mention in your post whether you have an upgrade version or retail version of XP Pro. You may have an OEM version XP Pro disk. If your XP Pro w/SP1 is not an upgrade disk nor a retail version of XP Pro, then you will not be able to upgrade XP Home with it. OEM version allows you to only clean-install XP. Only upgrade disk or full retail versions allow you to upgrade. Regards suatcini
