after deleting my old windows98 and restarting pc i got blue screen with message stop: 0x0000007B. And then it hangs. in fdisk i can see my partition as nfts, but i cannot read it anyhow. can somebody help?

First off the blue screen of death could be from ram or no virtual memory since you did delete win98. Well you must format! But if you need to get files on the ntfs I could help. Get a copy of partition magic for DOS if you can't run windows. Convert the ntfs partition to FAT or fat32 I would go with fat32. If your able to convert then next step would be to reinstall win98 without format, then back up your s---. after that install winxp from scratch. Get a win98 startup disk boot up with it. Then go to the cd drive letter in dos and type D:\i386 then enter. now type winnt at the prompt. Substitute D for whatever letter your drive is. Peace WP from STAten Island NYC Later. If you need more help email me at memorysticky@hotmail.com

I don't understand something. You said that you removed 98 and fdisk says that the drive/partition is ntfs?? Windows 98 will not run on ntfs. Something is screwy right there.
In fdisk goto delete the partition (Choice 3 I think) and then goto delete non dos partition. After that recreate the primary dos partition and install Xp.
Hope this helps,
Sandman
