Hi!!!!
I hope you can help me with my problem regarding the installation of Windows XP
Professional. My processor is AMD ATHLON XP 1.7 GHZ, my video card is
GEFORCE 4 MX440/440SE (128 MB) and I have 256 MB of RAM.Here is my problem:
I start my computer with windows 98 second edition and I want to upgrade to Windows XP
Professional. I run the setup.exe in the root of the CD and I chose to upgrade my version of windows
to windows xp. When the setup restarts my computer, the boot loader appears and I chose
Windows XP professional setup. Now it runs in text mode, but I received a black screen
and a blinking cursor then my computer restarts. When I chose Windows Xp professional
again in the boot loader, the same problem persist. Also I try to boot from my CD and the setup
launches and it says on my left buttom on my sreen that the "setup is loading files", then before the
"welcome to setup" screen appears, my computer restarts. Then I try to boot from CD to clean install,
the same problem occurs. Then I copy the i386 folder then run WINNT.exe. The setup copy files
to my hard disk and restarts my computer. The boot loader appears and I chose Windows XP
setup. Then the setup launches and loading files, but before the welcome to setup screen appears,
my computer restarts again and the same problem persist again. What should be the cause problem
and what should I do to install Windows Xp on my computer. I hope you can help me. Thanks and
God bless!!!

Boot from the Windows XP CD. Make sure you have the CD drive as the first boot device in the BIOS. Leave the Windows 98 out of it. If the XP CD is an upgrade CD it may ask you to insert the 98 CD to check that you qualify for the upgrade.
Once it has done that, you remove the 98 CD and continue with the installation using the XP CD.

My cdrom is first to boot and I boot from the cd. When the setup launches, it says that tha setup is loading files for the setup. But before the "Welcome to setup" screen appears, my computer restarts.

Having upgraded two Win98se machines to XP Pro successfully my steps were:
1.)Download and run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx)
2.) Download appropriate drivers and software as indicated by Upgrade Advisor for any hardware or programs which it tells me will not be compatible witn WinXP. (I.E. Printer, Video Card, scanner, etc.) Alternatively have the manufacturers disc ready.
3. Backup to CD all critical files that definitely don't want to lose.
4. Uninstall programs with known incompatibility as indicated by either website or Upgrade Advisor. (I.E Norton's IS, scanner software)
5. Shutdown computer
6. Reboot putting in WinXP Pro Upgrade CD.
7. After (or during) installation reinstall appropriate drivers and software.
8. Use WinXP Pro
I have done this on a P2 350 w 256meg RAM and a Athlon 1000 w/ 1 gig RAM. There were som issues but I didn't need the backup discs and all my settings were transferred along with emails, contacts and barring a mistake I made with my mobile phone synchonising software everthing works. It might have been 'better' to do a clean install but with 40 gig of 'stuff' on an 80 gig drive I am glad I did it this way.
Good luck and cheers
