Folks,

I am trying to now upgrade RAM on my PC.

From 256 I want to make it atleast 512MB so that I can install Virtual PC 2007 on my desktop. I am sure I have couple of more slots for RAM.

I had posted this issue last week and was been advised to upgrade RAM and install XP SP2.

(read this: http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/...

I have upgraded to SP2 now but not sure about RAM supported (either DDR1 or DDR2).

I have Phoenix Technoliges LTD 6.0 BIOS.

I went through Phoenix site, manuals and was unable to find anything that helps me.

Can someone please tell me what do I need to know more about my PC so that I can buy correct RAM for my desktop.

On side note: I have used Belarc Advisor to determine my current system configuration if that helps.

Thank You

I would suggest you download the freeware system information for Windows app, SIW.
Just Google SIW will find it for you.
Run it and under Hardware\Memory you'll find the information you need.

OK, so why did you go to the Phoenix site after running Belarc? It should have given you the motherboard (or at least the chipset model), RAM amount & type, CPU make/model, etc. I think you need to have another look at the results.

If that doesn't help, follow Cuffy's suggestion. Another possibility is CPU-Z.

Does Belarc tell you the brand/model number of your motherboard? If so, you can use this information to Google for the specs, including maximum amount and type of RAM supported.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Jam, as I said in my previous post I am not sure where to look and what would determine what type of RAM. Dunno Phoenix site or somewhere else.

***********************************

Here is output from Belarc:

Main Circuit Board

Board: SiS-661
Serial Number: UY6N44801420
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 01/05/2005

OS

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

Processor

2.40 gigahertz Intel Celeron
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

************************************

There is much more but I think its irrelevant to the question. If still someone says I need SIW then I will download it.

Probably SiS-661 is the answer. Should have read as Mother Board.

Thank you for help.

No, you still didn't post enough info. SiS-661 is the chipset used on the motherboard & we now know that you have a Celeron 2.4GHz CPU with a 133MHz bus clock (aka 533MHz FSB). I'm sure the RAM type is listed somewhere in the info that you neglected to post.

But based on the chipset info from the SiS website, it appears that your board most likely uses DDR-SDRAM. And since your CPU runs at 133MHz, you *should* be running PC2700 (aka DDR333) RAM. You're still gonna have to determine how many RAM slots you have & the max amount supported per slot. Did you try CPU-Z?

You can also take the ram bar to the electronics store, give it to the sales person. Tell him how much you want and also tell him the motherboard name to make sure it will support the amount of ram you are looking for.

Who built this "custom" machine? Can you ask the builder which motherboard was used? Can you see a model number on the motherboard?

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Any information required to upgrade ram is summarily displayed in SIW. The type, the number of slots on the board, the number being used, etc.
There is absolutely no requirement to indulge in this PI stuff.
You can always go to Crucial.com and let them scan the machine. They will identify the type, the amount, and guarantee it will work. The biggest drawback to this method is you've got enough info to buy ram but you don't have anything else that is readily available from an app like SIW or PC Wizard 2008.......... both freeware and either will tell you way more than you can understand about your machine.

Thank You all.

I will try what Cuffy has told me once I get some time.

It should answer all of my questions. If any problems i have to post again.

Thanks again. Great help
