Hello, I am hoping someone here can clarify this for me.
I want to upgrade my computer to a XP Computer. I have Windows 98 SE. Now I can buy the upgrade for over 100 dollars less than the full version.
Now my question is, I expect to re-install XP every 6 months to a year. Now everytime I want to format my hard-drive, and re-install XP, will I have to install 98SE first, then do the upgrade? Or can I just install XP Fresh from the Upgrade disc?

You can install XP from an Upgrade CD without first installing a qualifying OS. During setup you will be prompted for a qualifying product CD--just insert the 98 CD, click a button, and switch it out for the XP CD again.
"If it ain't broke, upgrade anyway."

Hi Slinkie, tropic, hello everyone,
No problem with using the upgrade cd as mentioned by topic.
I've done a lot of installs from a formatted hard drive using the Upgrade cd. I highly recommend you do the "clean install" using the upgrade cd and not the "upgrade install". Best Regards and Wishes, Mesich, Webmaster of mesich.com Currently stored on a temporary webhost.

You state "Now I can buy the upgrade for over 100 dollars less than the full version." You must be looking locally, or at prices for "retail" copies. OEM copies are the exact same thing without the packaging. At www.directdeals.com you can get full OEM versions of XP Home for $89 and XP Pro for $138.

for the umpteenth time, "OEM" versions ARE NOT THE SAME as "retail without the packaging"
Summary: No no no!!! Do not buy the full version. You can do do a clean install with the upgrade. All that will happen is that the installation will ask you insert the CD of the previous OS for verification. O...
Summary: I was curious, I have had problems with upgrades in the past (it seems as if the full version works better). I was planning on going with either XP home or XP professional, full and doing a reformat ...
