I have Win ME installed on my computer right now and I wanted to replace it with XP. If I was to buy the "upgrade" ...can I do a clean install from it?

My opinion is that if you want to do a clean install you might as well shell out the extra cash and get the full version. That is what I did. I think in the long run it will make your life a lot easier (if you have to reinstall again).

No no no!!! Do not buy the full version. You can do do a clean install with the upgrade. All that will happen is that the installation will ask you insert the CD of the previous OS for verification. Other than that, there is no difference and you save yourself $100.

I never upgrade something basic, like OS. I always use Full Version and do clean install. Often upgrading an OS will give u some problems.

Thanks all...I found a place that sells oem versions really cheap ...so I'm gonna get the full pro version for just a little more than the upgrade. :)

Psychos advice is great. If your system came with ME preinstalled the upgrade will not allow you to do a clean install. Setup will not recognize the recovery disk that came with the PC as a previous version of windows. If youve already formatted the drive and then found this out in some cases you will not even be able to load windows me back on the drive as the recovery cd may come back with an error with something along the lines of "you cant use this disk cuz this aint the box it belongs to" Upgrading from the preinstalled junk is a nightmare because you first have to install one then the upgrade then remove the stuff not compatible with xp then clean out the clutter left by the recvoery cd etc etc. Get the full version and save yourself some headaches.
Summary: Hello, I am hoping someone here can clarify this for me. I want to upgrade my computer to a XP Computer. I have Windows 98 SE. Now I can buy the upgrade for over 100 dollars less than the full version...
Summary: I was curious, I have had problems with upgrades in the past (it seems as if the full version works better). I was planning on going with either XP home or XP professional, full and doing a reformat ...
