I went into my local Staples. I want to upgrade from 98. Two of the sales people said they would recommend ME until XP gets the bugs out.
They also said XP sales have been a disaster compared to all the hype that Microsoft has been puting forward to the media. They pointed out their printers, cameras and others that don't work with XP.
My question is whether to go with ME now and wait for the next operating system after XP to come out, or get XP now and deal with driver problems and such things?
Money is not the major issue, I am more concerned with not having major operating issues and compatibility issues.

You are the only one who can really answer that question. You need to research(this forum counts) between the two OSes and find out which one is better for you needs. ME for example is a little easier to operate than XP. If you have used Windows 2000 you will understand the little differences and also not have any problems with XP. Obviously XP is new and it has problems but as time goes on those problems will get worked out. ME is older and thus more bugs have been worked out, but that does not mean it is problem free.
I am running XP Pro and I have huge problems with display drivers, the Viper II just doesn’t want to work with XP. However, other than video card problems the OS has been problem free. It is kind of funny because my computer is 3 years old and the Viper II is my newest piece of hardware =\ Overall I am pleased with the OS.
I would say ME is “probably” more compatible with your system, but XP is a better OS and if you can run it you should. Hope this helps.1 Vote - XP

I'll go with XP as well, ME didn't work for me at all. It may have gotten better but it's still no bargain plus it's pretty much agreed that ME was the worst of the current OS's that MS put out. Yes you may have some compatability difficulties but if your system is only a few (3ish) years old then you should be OK.

Wouldn't wait another day to upgrade to XP!
As the above illustrates, it is essential to do the compatability research - I have an older PIII 600 with parts from an even older PII 333(ancient cdrom, 3yr old burner) and all went smoothly - not one problem to date. Read the forums regarding some software issues (Nero& missing cdroms, Roxio EZ, Soundblaster); I have had no problems with hardware or software and most of the post I read appear to come form people who did'nt research. Check for all upgraded drivers, check MS compatability info and go! XP is the best home OS microsoft has made; you won't look back!

For what its worth I would stick with your present OS. Two main reasons, Win ME WAS AND IS THE WORST OS ever, with regards to XP Home or XP professional I am using both at the present moment, I wish I had stayed with Win 98se. There are far to many bugs in both XP versions add to that we are doing Microsofts job for them by having to report every error to them, which brings me to the conclusion that they are no more than glorified Beta versions. But probably what annoys me most is that Microsoft done deals with certain company's and if any of the Hardware or Software is not on their list you will have terrible problems getting Drivers,Patches etc.Like I said in the beginning if what you have already works stick with it?
Hope this helps you out.

I had zero problems with ME. Worked great. Xp is over hyped and still a pain. I will keep with it for bit.
Unfortunately Microsoft has too much influence with the reviewers. Free software. Lots of help. I'm sure their phone calls are returned.
Sales have been crappy but I don't know if this is because of the OS or most users are content with what they have.

I bought a new Dell P3 1GHz last spring with ME installed. After months of frustration with this crappy OS, I threw in the towel and went back to W98. I have recently installed XP Professional, and aside from some spontaneous rebooting (which I appear to have cured with the addition of 128 MB more RAM), XP has worked well. I would recommend forgetting about ME - it's not worth $1 of your money. Upgrade to XP, or stick with W98 until all the XP bugs are worked out. Good luck.

Stay with 98 for now. Reask the question in 3 or 4 months. Xp is good but full of hastles. If it ain't broke don't fix it. or. If your Os does want you want, leave it alone.

Win98se offers, by far, the widest compatability with devices and applications. Such will remain the situation for several months...or likely years.
Windoze ME was crippleware released to simply condition the user/oem base for windoze NT/XP onto consumer desktops. It's "enhanced stability" bears the same stench of incompatability as previous NT's.
You won't miss a thing sticking w/ 98se...cept the hassle, bloat, nagging and WPAggravation of NT/XP.

I have, by FAR, more trouble with XP than I ever did with ME.
Although all my hardware (even some that supposedly "isn't compatable") all works flawlessly, the O/S in general is flakey. It seems to get confused at times and apparently has trouble multitasking. Many programs cause endless disk useage and essentally "freeze" the PC untill the suspect application is closed. Using MS word is "lazy" and has trouble scrolling. Too many pop-ups on the browser or script errors in the pages code and that too will crash.
Overall I would say its still BETA in the way it acts overall and was NOT ready for release. It's "dumbed-down" options and interface are great, if you over 80 or under 10.
If you using it for home then go with ME, if its for business than go with 2000. I would leave XP alone, at least for now.

hi
I took the pluge and Installed XP Home 3 weeks ago from ME, and I have never looked back! My system has never crashed in 3 weeks and compared 2 ME, which crashed at least twice a day, it is brilliant. The UI is customisable - http://themexp.org and you can get all sorts of UIs for it free! All my games work and my hardware is 95% compatible. Then again, my system was 8 months old (Athlon 1.2, 256RAM, Nvidia Geforce 2) and I have only had problems with a Sony MS Walkman. Id say go for it and dont get ME - it sucks - slow, bloatware etc.
hope this helps,
james

System specs? This will play a major role in whether or not you will love or hate XP.
The PC im using was built for 98SE and ran terrible. This is not because 98SE was terrible, it was because HP made it terrible before they installed it. Runs great with ME Runs great with XP.
I had to download update drivers for my printer and sound card for XP and had to let go of alarm simple (my favorite little freeware alarm clock) because it wouldnt save its settings.
Make sure your system will handle XP and format/clean install the OS. Might as well skip ME if you can since they are both about the same price.in memory of alarm simple.......Unless someone here knows how to fix it :)

Are you using version 1.3 or 1.4?
1.4 can be had here
http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/8272.htmlDid you try a reinstall using the program compatability wizard?
How about E-mailing the author(hey he asked for comments)!!

Jimi you just made my day! Just when i was ready to give up.... I had the current version but decided to redownload it and so far so good. 400 burns screwed it up :)? Patrick has many many emails from me :) Thanks Jimi

Why do your sytems crash all the time? Mine didn't with ME and doesn't with Xp. AND I don't know anything about computers beyond the on switch.

switched to xp a few weeks ago also went with amd xp 1600+ with 640 megs of ram love it no problems except cant get my web cam to work

Correct me if I am wrong. My opinion is the upgrade disk for windows xp works flawlessly on systems from companies that are partners with microsoft (IBM, Compaq, HP, Gateway). These companies actually did some work writing parts of windows xp, hence, all the drivers are there.
So my advice, if you own a custom made pc, do not upgrade to windows xp unless you can get all the drivers first. If you own a pc from these manufacturers, go for it. It will be painless.
