Hello. I have a 20gig western digital and 60 gig maxtor drive. Wanted to upgrade my hard drive by copying all files. I used Norton Ghost 2003, both by backing up and restoring and by cloning. error message when booting the 60 gig is "missing operating system". I decided to just install a new copy of XP, got through setup and it blinks at a black screen and will not boot into XP either. It installs the setup files, then rebots to a black cursor. The 60 gig works fine as a slave, but will not allow me to install XP on it. I have the jumpers correct, have latest BIOS.

When you cloned from ghost did you clone partition to partition or disk to disk? To have a bootable disk you must use disk to disk.

In regard to the XP install problem. Make sure that you don't have an anti-virus option enabled in the Bios. That can cause some strange problems when trying to install an OS.

ghost does NOT suuport 'hot backup' ... you have to 'ghost' in dos mode using the 'disc to disc' option

or go to the disc manufacturer's home page and get a disk setup&cloning tool (i.e. EZ Drive)

I did use the clone option in the winxp Ghost, but did not use disk to disk because I have information on the D: and E: drives also. I tried mator utilities that came with the drive, still got "missing operating system"

Are D and E partitions or seperate drives? If they are partitions ghost copies everything disk to disk and even partitions the cloned drive to the proper sizes. If they are separate drives there will be no problem.

You must create the ghost boot floppie and run it from the boot in dos.

C: is 20 gig old drive with XP. D:, E:, F: (20 gig each) are the 60 gig new drive. E: and F: have data on them I really didn't want to get rid of, so I didn't want to do an disk to disk copy wiping out E and F.

Now I understand. Did you physically remove the 20 gig and install the 60 on IDE0 before trying to do a fresh install on the 60?

Yes, and that is when I got a blinking cursor going into XP. I may backup E and F and try the disk to disk copy, only tried partition to partition.

For some reason ghost does not clone the system files in the partition to partition mode. I went through this months ago with tech support. CasperXP is the same.

look for a program called EZDrive ... use the 'copy entire partition' option ... always worked great for me.

i only use ghost for drive images (for a reason :-).

i found a d/l link for ezdrive ... it's driverguide.com ... when propted for login use the following: drivers / all

http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=85286

p.s.: ontrack manager is a similiar program ... just a different 'label' :-)

I backed up the D and E, then booted to a norton ghost PC DOS disk, did disk to disk copy. It transferred fine, then reboot with the 60 gig. "missing operating system". Man this is frustrating.

Mattie,

I can't use the western digital copier, because it says the maxtor drive is not compatible. Tried the maxtor utililty at the start of this project, it didn't work either.

It appears you are going to have to boot from the XP CD, go to the install menu an format, then install XP on the HD for a fresh install and then reinstall all the xp updates. Be sure your Firewall is enabled. then install your A/V before going on the net. Then install all the XP updates, then reinstall all your programs. You will have a totally clean install which is a good thing. Just takes time.

Did you do as I suggested above and swap the HD's to the 60 to IDE 0 and remove the 20?

Yes I did. I gave up on Norton and tried the MaxBlast 3 that came with the drive one more time. It took forever, like 2 hours, but finally copied it and booted correctly.
