Subject: Upgrade from Win 98 to Win XP
OS: WIN 98 First Edition
CPU/Ram: Pentium 3
Comment:

I have a laptop running on Win 98 that connects to my office network in which I can log in the network with my login and password.

I did try an upgrade to Win XP PRO but somehow it does not want to connect to my office network. It seems that Win XP PRO does not retain the domain connection after the upgrade.

Question: how do I do an upgrade to Win XP and retain all my network settings, so that I can connect to the network, without the hassle of contacting my network administrator.

Please advice.

when upgrading, it must have asked you to set it up at the Welcome to Windows XP screen after installation. That should be it.

else

After the upgrade you have to Set it up. Entering Workgroup and Domain names, IP addresses and etc.

:> The world is certainly a Very Small Place

On my original Win 98 screen after bootup:

Login: Je****
Password: *********
Network: D-NSW-001

Under the Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network -> Identification
Computer Name: NSW8
Workgroup: Workgroup
Computer Name: NSW8 Computer

I have checked the IP, DNS, ... etc settings in the Win XP which is no changed after the upgrade. That means Win XP retained all my IP, DNS etc settings from my original WIN 98.

But how do I get access to my network IF i want to use Win XP? During the windows xp installation, i came across that there is a screen asking me whether am i allow to add more computers on the domain..or something like that..which i click no and then they ask to contact the administrator, which is something i wanna avoid.

hello,

Without the help of your domainadministrator you will never get it to work.
Win98 does not register itself in the doamin like XP does.
To logon to this domain you will need a computeraccount within the domain.
This is something only an admin can do and not a user
sorry for you, but better ask in advance and not afterwards. There is no way back no that will garatee you access to the domain.
Maybe unstalling will work but i don'nt think so.

success and greeetz

For response 7,
"sounds as if you arnt logged on to your network. " - yes he's right, i can't log into the network after the upgrade.

Question:
Why is that in Win 98 that I can enter the domain whereas Win XP I cannot? Shouldn't XP retained all the Win 98 domain settings?
