Dear Friends,
I have a problem regarding upgradation of Windows XP (Professional Ed.) to Windows XP (Professional Ed.) Service Pack 1.
I already using Windows XP (Professional Ed.), for extra features and security, I want my OS to upgrade to Windows XP (Professional Ed.) SP1, I directly upgrade my system with SP1, which I had download from Microsoft site. After installing it my system had slowed down too much, then for this problem I reinstall Windows XP (Professional Ed.) with SP1, after formatting my C: drive. But then also I face same problem, ie the system's speed slowed down very much, and resolution is decreased below 800x600 pixels, and it cannot be incresed by display properties panel. So please tell me, how I can upgrade my system to Service Pack 1, how these problems are solved. I am very thankful for providing me support, as some programs. utilities or softwares require Service Pack 1,

So if I am understanding you correctly, the only two problems you are having are that your computer slows down when you have installed sp1, and your resolution is at like 640 x 480 or something and you cant change it.
The resolutions problem you described sounds like a driver issue. Id reinstall your video card driver. Dont use the default windows driver.
Im not sure about the sp issue. What size is your hard drive? Have you tried updating to service pack 2? Have you tried installing all your hardware drivers?
There are 10 types of people in the world, those who know binary, and those who don't.

Forget about SP1. Download the instal pack for SP2. If you have done a complete format and reinstal of your original XP Pro then go directly for the SP2 upgrade. Your display problems are probably because you have not reinstalled either your chipset or graphics card drivers after the fresh operating system instal. You will need to do that.
If you continue to have slowness issues then consider upgrading your ram. 256 should be enough but double that will definitely improve the situation.Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

Richard, some computers have trouble with sp2, hence all the recent sp2 critical updates =\
He might be in that situation. Also, he should have enough ram, winxp only requires 64 as a minimum system requirement and I have had 256mbs of ram in systems I have built before and upgraded to 512 and have only seen minor differences in general processing time...of course it all depends on what you want to do with your pc.There are 10 types of people in the world, those who know binary, and those who don't.

I still stand by my recommendation to bypass SP1 and go straight to SP2 since Msoft has instigated compulsory SP2 upgrades as a pre-requisite to any further updates. The main culprits for SP2 incompatibilities are name brand systems with proprietary components where each manufacturer provides their own patch to overcome SP2 problems. Most of the post-SP2 updates that have come out are further security patches for newly discovered holes, not compatibility fixes.

I agree with Richard in Response Number 4.
Also go here and run through these check lists before installing SP2...
