When I'm trying to install service pack 1 for Office Xp I get this error....
"ERROR 1328. error applying patch to file C:\Config.Msi\PTE1.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more info contact your patch vendor"

It sounds like you are running a pirated version!

I have a retail copy of works suite on this box and the word is version 2002 . I checked it twice on about in word. And when I downloaded 3 updates none of them took it said a different version of word was found than expected. So I guess its bills bill adding up word 2002 and word 2002 not the same go figure . If every one else would start using star office or open office.org bill would lose out .I have open office.org on my other box and it is great and its free .Almost 50mb Took 3 hours to download

I posted already on this forum about this error - to fix it use the following manual on my site:

http://membres.lycos.fr/julieborette/updateofficexp.htm

basically you have to do an administrative install. it works for the following packages:

1) sp1
2) web components
3) winword June 19 update
4) excel June 19 update

I created a new cd with all of these updates, now whenever I install office xp, I don't have to update, because the cd contains all updates. and the error you describe doesn't occur any longer. more useful addresses:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/appndx/appc00.htm

http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/xp/appndx/appb00.htm#German

remember to use the appropriate language packs! I had to use german, otherwise the updates didn't work!

you do not have do admin install and go thru all that trouble, just wait for new sp1 by MS on Sep 9th 2002 which has fixes.
