updates from the web being blocked

I am behind a corporate firewall and am unable to get updates of any kind. Is this being blocked by the company firewall or is it the way my browser is configured.

I have already spoken to them. They are contractors and seem to have a fairly basic level of knowledge. They think it is probably the way the firewall is setup but are not sure. I suspose my question is do update represent a security risk. The particular site I want to look at displays ok except some fields are not updated as they should be. Is this because these fields are updated using a port that is being blocked by the firewall. If this is the case there is nothing that I can do but it seems strange that I can see smost of the web page but not the fields that are updated with in this case stockmarket figures.

You want be able to see what I am talking about unless you login and you cant do that without a username and password. I have contacted igmarkets also but they didnt really know either.

What does viewing fields on a website have to do with downloading updates to your computer?

Well I am also unable to download updates to programs such as Spybot. I suspect that the Firewall is blocking the updates and is also blocking the price update fields in the website I am looking at. ie igmarkets.com
