Last month, Mozilla released Firefox 3.0 and claimed a Guinness World Records of 8,002,530 downloads between 6:16pm UTC/GMT on Tuesday 17th June 2008 and 6:16pm UTC/GMT on Wednesday 17th June 2008. That's cool.

Then last Saturday while everybody were asleep or busy enjoying the weekend, Mozilla quietly released Firefox 3.0.1.

My question here is ..

If you are one of the 8,002,530 users that downloaded Firefox 3, did Mozilla sent you e-mail encouraging you to upgrade again to fix three critical security vulnerabilities and resolves a handful of minor bugs.

Given Mozilla past history, will we have to continue updating Firefox on a monthly basis as we have with Firefox 2?

Would you rather they didn't fix newly discovered vulnerabilities in a timely manner?

Ugh.

Of course not, but to update FF month after month after month is ridiculous especially for the IT managers in large corporations, Poor those guys and gals they are already overburdened doing too much mundane tasks, IMO.

I agree here... from the most supposed secure browser to one that needs to be patched every other day! Hmmmm

Must make Linux die hards turn, we might be introduced to Konqueror next as the most secure browser ever!

Even better, let's reduce our online vulnerability by adopting a browser that we can navigate through via the command line interface... yeah

I like Opera

Opera updates when vulnerabilities are found, maybe not as fast as Mozilla updates Firefox, but they do update their browser when necessary.

BTW, Linux actually releases security updates pretty often.

Firefox is not the most secure browser ever, and Mozilla does not have my e-mail address.

Huh?

If you keep Firefox updated, you shouldn't have any problems with drive-by downloads etc., but you can't fix stupid.

It's this simple; if a vulnerability is found, Mozilla fixes it in a timely manner. I think that's commendable.

Mozilla has the e-mail addresses of those who registered for the initial release of FF 3. The Guinness World Records is based on pre-registered database. Mozilla send you e-mail with link to FF3 download. This is how they claimed the world record.

Oh, so that's what s/he meant. I didn't register with them.

I actually still use Fx 2.0.0.16 because of several extensions that I use and I'm not crazy about the idea of the new "awesome bar".

My preferred browser is actually SeaMonkey, tho'.

It's more a matter of intrigue rather than
"Who knows what" or "what is best?",

but who can lay claim to the best browser?

What's best?

Speed?... Security?... Ease of use?... Add on's?

You could devise a browser that could serve breakfast in bed and 99% of the population wouldn't notice.... the shame of it all is that they go with what they know.... point and click.

*Shrugs*

I still like Opera

>>>"but you can't fix stupid."<<<

Amen to that.

The browser wars can be started here again if you wish, but the best arsenal against "nasties" is the brain. Like walking down the bad part of town after midnight, if you don't come packing heat, you're gonna get burned...

Already one out there (or at least one that's sans GUI). And it works pretty well:

Micro$oft is still patching IE 6.0 / 7.0 it would be good if they would finally plug the holes that have plagued IE since version 5.0.

Mozilla are fixing security bugs in Firefox in a timely fashion, which is more than can be said for Microsoft.

IE 8.0 is coming... Snickersnortle! 8)

"Of course not, but to update FF month after month after month is ridiculous"

You're updating I.E. more often than that, via Windows Update.

It's of little importance, to me, which browser people consider to be the best or worst. What matters is which browser is more of a security threat.

That'd be, .... I.E.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Don't like the number 13 ... so I'll chip one in.

Netscape is the best browser: it doesn't get updated hardly at all. In fact, it is now in total atrophy as a result .... take that IE & FF!

IE is only a security threat if it is set up retardedly.

You people obviously only listen to folklore; and mustn't know what a zone layer is.
