Could someone please go to the trouble of letting me know " blow by blow" how to find out what drivers are installed on my system, if they are the best ones, if there are new updated ones available and most important, how to install them properly., The last time I tried, it took me nearly 5 hours to correct what I had stuffed up !! Yes, I am a novice at this stuff..can't you tell
The modem driver is the one I seem to have the problem with, what is the proceedure with them ? last time, after I had downloaded the new driver, as directed by the download site (uninstalled the modem), and then Windows could not detect the modem again - ARGHHHHHHH 5 hours later, somehow it seem to go, but have had " device manager problem ever since - I can't access it !!!! Anyway, to end this epilogue, thanks anyone for attempting to help.

It's really easy:)
Most of the drivers come with installers so all you have to do once you have downloaded, is click on it and it will do the rest for you. If for some reason it won't work that way, go to: 'controlpanel'-'system'-'hardware'-'device manager'. Pick the item you're interested in - right click for 'properties'- 'update driver' - 'specify location(advanced)'. That's it.
Device Manager is also the place to find out what drivers have you got. Right click for 'properties'- 'driver' tab and there you have all the information you might need. The best way to find out whether there is a new version of a driver is to simply go to the manufacturer's web site.
A small piece of advice: if your hardware is functioning properly with the drivers provided by Windows XP or your old ones - don't change that. Newest is not always best. Specially with Microsoft;)Hope that helps.

Me again.
Have you tried "System Restore"? That should bring your Device Manager back to life...
Go to help&support, than system restore and follow the instructions.
