unwanted popups

I have a Dell 4400 I have windows XP I don't know exactly what else I am suppose to know to give you information. I could just be idleing and when I return to my computer there are grey boxes with popups and on under neath the other maybe 1-3 at a time. How do I stop them

Try this;
1.Right-click My Computer icon and select "Manage" 2.Open Services and Applications 3.Open Services 4.Open Messenger Service 5.Click Stop button 6.Change "Startup Type" to DISABLE 7.Click OK to close everything
