unwanted icon in tray

Comment:
After re installing XP I have noticed a pesky little icon in my system tray at the bottom right. Its labelled SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE, and when double clicked it wants to remove my USB MASS STORAGE DEVICE. This device is working properly but I don't know why the icon is there and why my system wants to remove the USB device. Any suggestions on how I can remove from my start up icons? thank you

The System doesn't want to remove your Device - the Icon is there for IF and WHEN you do want to remove it
I have one also for an external ADSL Modem
I daresay someone will tell you how to remove it if that's what you want to do

Rich, As Lesley stated it is here for a reason. You could try hiding it. Right click your Start button, choose Properties, under the Tskbar tab click the Customize button, Hilite that icon and under the word "Behavior" click the words appearing there now and use the dropdown arrow button, then choose "allways hide", and OK your way out.

I don't want to hide the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE, I want to remove it from the system tray because me or my wife and or kids might remove it, and I don't want that. I there a way to remove it? Thanks Doug
