Howdy ho everyone, Im attempting to install windows on a new Raptor 150gb hard drive. I read on line that when i boot from the windows cd i have to use the f6 option and install the drivers off a diskette. I have already put the drivers from asus.com on the diskette, but when i boot off the cd, it seems to ignore my f6 command. if i press f2 it will go to automoated recovery and if i wait, i can go through my options at the end. How do i let it install my drivers.??

You are running an Athlon64 chip. Your MBoard natively recognises SATA drive so you don't need to install SATA drivers at the F6 prompt.

Does your WinXP CD have at least SP1 on the disk? If not you will need to partition the drive because XP original can't work with drives larger than 127GB. After all is installed you will be able to format and use the remainder of the disk. Enter the BIOS and verify that you have the SATA connected to the first SATA controller and it is properly identified. Then Set your boot order. I recommend this order: First boot device= disabled, Second= CD, third HDD0, fourth, enabled. There may be other settings for a first boot device. You didn't post your MBoard. Boot to the WinXP CD and follow the prompts. I recommend that you disconnect from the internet while installing. After windows is done installing, install the MBoard chipset and periphial drivers. If LCD display install monitor driver. Install a firewall. Connect to the internet and update windows. Reboot and then install additional hardware, like scanners, printers, etc. Then programs. I think I about covered it.
BTW, the first boot device is reserved for a floppy. If you have one and wish to enable it as the first device do so, but it is easy enough to do that when you need to boot from it. Floppy will still work in Windows.

You can partition during the XP boot process.
Look here for how.

☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Then you don't have the connections and/ or BIOS settings correct. Verify that the HDrive is connected to the lowest number SATA connector. Your MBoard probably doesn't support SATA II so if there is a jumper on the back of the MBoard to run in SATA I set for SATA I. Enter the BIOS and set your boot order: first boot device= disabled, second boot device= CD, third boot device HDO (read the chioces and be sure it is set for the SATA). If you have IDE devices be sure to enable the IDE channels. If you are using a USB Keyboard set the BIOS to Enable legusy USB devices (keyboard).

Any chance of giving me a more detailed description for my asus sk8n motherboard? and should my raptor have any jumpers on it?

When i try with the setup that looks appropriate in the bios, my keyboard turns off when its time to press enter to install windows.

OK, your Harddrive is SATA I so no jumpers, don't worry about that. The Asus site is down so I couldn't get any info on your MBOard. However I believe that MBoard is based on nForce3 chipset. As such I MAY have been wrong when I told you that you didn't need to install the SATA driver. Did you check the items I mentioned in response #8? You indicated that you have copied the SATA drivers to a floppy disk. If so, then follow the instructions in #8. When the computer is starting you should see a message to boot from the CD press any key. Tap the spacebar at that time. The computer should recognise the CD and start the XP installation. Read all the screens and you will see how to partition the drive. When prompted, hit F6 and supply the floppy disk. Leave the disk in place until prompted to remove. If you can't figure out how to partition the Raptor then abort the WinXP install and use the Western Digital drive utility. You may have gotten a disk with the drive, or DLoad from WD.
What kind of detailed description do you need for your MBoard? Did you assemble it? do you have a manual? The manual will explain all.

Don't have the manual on me. When I try to install the sata (f6) when installing windows, it just seems to not recognize im pressing f6. If i press f2 it will go to ASR but won't respond to f6.
Should i have Bios choice as "raid" or "ide"?
