Hello, I have a problem with my computer and would appreciate any assistance.
I am running Windows XP Home Edition (legit of course). My computer had several strings of problems and I figured it was about time to reinstall Windows XP (Not format - just a simple reinstall of the core components, the "Upgrade" option - not Clean Install). A while back my computer kept saying "Invalid Boot.ini" on startup, I researched here on the forums, found the solution, but ignored it for several months as it caused no problems.
Recently, every single time I started my computer, and every few minutes thereafter I would get a message telling me "Files needed to maintain system stability have been replaced by unrecognized versions. Please place your Windows XP Home Edition in the Drive and Click Retry. (Options were: Retry, More Info, Cancel). So for about 2 days I just left my Windows XP Home Edition CD in the drive and clicked RETRY everytime the popup would come up. Tired of this, I thought I would do a clean-install Windows XP to get rid of this. All hell breaks lose soon after.
I uninstall some needless programs, BlackICE (Application Protection can cause some problems), My ISP, and several security suites, mostly dealing with Spyware. Anyway I boot up my Computer from the Windows XP CD and try to install Windows. Error - No Boot.ini found. Same problem I hadn't remedied some time ago. I took the liberty of following the steps provided here by doing a "search" and used my Recovery console to type in bootcfg /rebuild etc...
Solved.
Now I restart my computer and try to Install Windows XP. As it tries to install I get this error message:[C:\Windows\setuperr.log] - title
Setup failed to remove the product cataglog IEEXCEP.CAT
**Warning: Setup failed to remove the product catalog SP1.cat (I didnt have SerPack1 installed btw?)
**Warning:
Setup failed to remove the product catalog wmplayer.catError:
The signature for Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade is invalid. The error code is fffffdf0.The system cannot find message text for message number 0xfffffdf0 in the message file for syssetup.dll
*Fatal Error:
Setup failed to install the product catalog. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more info.
So, now the install doesn't complete, and I am stuck in an eternal loop. Everytime I turn on my computer it says "Restarting setup..." (w/ the blue bground) and it KEEPS on trying to Windows XP Home Ed. again....I also tried keeping the CD in and then pressing any key to boot. From there I have three options
Press Enter to continue installation
Press F10 To cancel setup and install another version.
Press F3 to exit setup and not install.
All three options keep in my in this eternal loop, and I can't get back to my desktop!!
*Formatting isn't really an option for me, I didn't expect these errors and I didn't backup some "lifesaving important" essential files.
*I did a Virus scan prior to this, I run NAV 2003 (System works) I used Symantec Online Scan, and Trend Micro's Housecall: All clean.
*BTW I am using my friend's computer to type this message, so I am not logged on to the computer in question.
*Recent software additions include AOL 9.0, as 7.0 was becoming obsolete and not working. (Yes AOL Sucks - I know.)Any help about why I get these errors would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to get back to my desktop (most important!) and if possible correct these errors.
Any help would be appreciated as it is urgent I get to my desktop As Soon As Possible. I would appreciate any help and thanks in advance.

This suggestion seemed to allow the install to work: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=307153
As I am in the install process at this very moment. But how about the Unrecognized Files Error? I'll have to see and I'll report back. For some reason I recall ATW WAN miniport (or something to that extent - damned if I know what any of that means) Just thought I'd let ya know incase that rings anybells! As well as "ASMS", but i think that was during the install. Anyway any ideas what ATW WAN miniport (?) is?
