Quoted from this recent M$blog:
The retail packages, not the System Builder Editions, will cost:
Windows Vista Home Basic -
200€ or 255.55$ or 135.95£Windows Vista Home Premium -
400€ or 511.10$ or 271.90£Windows Vista Ultimate Edition -
500€ or 638.88$ or 339.87£Windows Vista Business -
650€ or 830.54$ or 441.84£Windows Vista Enterprise -
800€ or 1,022.20$ or 543.80£The good news is that most users will get their (subsidized) Windows Vista copy with a new computer.
No big deal, eh?

At that price they can keep it! Microsoft has more money then most contries. I will keep my XP till that price is more inline with what I feel its worth and that is not more then I paid for XP.

M$$ doesn't care what we think. They know we all are hooked to their stuffs. They are in business to make money for themselves.
i_XpUser

That may be true XpUser, but if enough people follow the comments of Polizi (Response No. 2), it possibly could send a message to M$. The old Supply and Demand senario. Then again, It may be only wishful thinking, on my part anyway.

I hope you're right but I tend to believe M$ will prevail as they did with the introduction of XP.
Another thing to keep in mind is that because M$ traditionally reap more money from the preinstalled copies than they do from the retail, there will be no market force sufficient to force them to bring down the price. The same concept applies with the skyrocketing Real Estate & fuel prices.
i_XpUser

Those prices are skewed and definitely can't be reliable.
Windows Vista Ultimate is a superset of both Vista Home Premium and Vista Business, and includes all of the features of both of those product versions, plus adds Game Performance Tweaker with integrated gaming experiences and a host of other stuff.

I agree with you. saber. That is why I titled this thread Unofficial Prices for Windows Vista.
Speaking of M$ being a big profiteers, they now are posing themselves to capitalize on the poor countries with their Pay as You Go Computers. Ugh!

You think you had seen a lot of pirated XP wait until this come out. The crackers are going to love it. :>))

The crackers are going to love it. :>))
Per, they already do. It's simple for anyone to get a pirated copy of Vista through the #winbeta IRC channel and torrents.
Fed up with Windows? Try Ubuntu Linux

tonysathre- I know. I have tried the latest version just for kicks but it doesn't have the required drivers to run it unless you search for them individually. I am not impressed at 2 gb of code either. :>)

The relationship between the Microsoft and pirates has always been symbiotic anyway, much like the flowering plant and bees.
Contrary to their press statements, pirates are the least of their worries trust me.

You may crack it but you won't see the fancy side of Vista - according to this report :-(
It's all because of the new feature called Aero that runs a check to make sure the software was properly purchased. Aero also is a new feature that provides new graphics tricks, including translucent windows, animated flips between open programs and "live icons" that show a graphical representation of the file in question. For more info click me.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder how that works. Even if Aero checks the registry for the right details, how will it distinguish whether the program is legitimate? After all, a crack puts the correct information in the registry so it looks legit.

I recall going thru the same when windows2.1 was introduced. I was really hesitant about leaving DOS. then again with 95 .. then again with 98 .. xp i thought was a big waste.
You will eventually fall into the MS trap .. unless you go with Linux. LOL
best of luck Frank :

I wish I could say I prefer Linux over Windows, but I can't. I do use Linux at home for a router, DHCP server, and VNC server. I also like to just mess around with it. There are so many programs and applications that i use everday and just don't want to bother trying to get them to run on Wine on Linux. There just not as stable and generally don't perform as well.

Running Windows programs emulated on Linux is really no solution either. Linux has everything natively you need except games. If you are a gamer, stick with Windows, at least on a dual boot.

"Linux has everything natively you need except games."
No it doesn't. I do a lot of network diagrams with Visio and the only half decent one I have found is Dia, which sucks compared to Visio.
Actually getting games to run on Linux isn't that hard. I play Call of Duty United Offensive and set up a dedicated Linux server running Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 and it works just fine.
Actually Wine isn't an emulator. The acronym stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator, lol.
