So today I finished putting everything in my new computer and I get the Unmountale Boot Volume thing.

Yeah, I read all the fixes posted here.. (chkdsk /r thing), but I cannot even get to the windows setup screen. I get the pre-load screen. Then i get the error.

Any help?

Well you might have to redo the system. Do an fdisk, clean the partitions and redo the system.

this is a windows XP software error. it can be caused by some sort of hardware failure, but not usually. if you just installed xp on a new system and immediately got the error, then probably so. i recommend booting to your XP cd, press 'R' for recovery console, enter 1 for windows installation, and press enter when it asks for password. when you have a prompt, type 'diskpart'. delete all partitions, then press esc. type at prompt 'fixmbr' and say yes. do that twice. boot back to windows setup and reinstall xp. after you're at the desktop and connected to the internet, immediately download and install service pack 1 and all the other updates. this should prevent this from happening again. good luck!!

XP has not been installed on this computer yet. That is what I am trying to do. I get the error just before the screen that allows me to do a recovery.

then all you have to do is follow my previous instructions, and you should be good to go. do you have the commercial version of XP? if so, then that is what you must do, because if you have new hardware, then windows MUST be reinstalled so it knows what it is working on. if it's a bootable cd, then the HDD will be bypassed so you can make it so. please post any more details so you can be helped in your issue.

There is no OS on the HDD yet. Everything in the computer is new and has been installed today. I do have a commercial version of XP.

The only thing that resembles recovery console is Automated System Recovery (F2). That comes up when the Windows XP cd boots up after the bios screen.

After that first blue screen where it loads the files and drivers, it says "Setup is starting windows". Then I get the error.

You have to install the recovery console. Open help and support from the start menu and type recovery console for directions.

you may have to create the 6 floppy disk recovery console kit so you can boot to recovery console and delete all partitions and fix the master boot record. go to microsoft.com, in the search bar enter 'Q310994' select your exact os (example - xp home SP 1), and download it to your desktop. double click and follow the instructions. this will create your recovery console kit. boot to it, then follow the previous instructions to delete all paritions and fix the MBR. go to bios and make sure that you can boot to it before it boots to your HDD (example - 1. removable devices 2. atapi cdrom 3. HDD 4. network boot). you have to boot to this before your HDD so you can do this. after you're HDD is raw, boot to your cd and setup win xp. it's a no brainer if you follow my instructions because it sounds to me that it is booting straight to your HDD. be sure to go to 'setup' by pressing F1 or whatever when you power your system. you will see it when your system posts. (power on self test). let me know if you need aditional assistance. be specific

Have you set the bios to boot from the CD before the HD? Are you booting from the XP CD?

Yes, it boots the cd before the HD.

Although the HD is primary IDE..where as the cd-rom is secondary. would that affect it any?

Are you selecting BOOT FROM CD on the boot menu? You have 5 seconds to hit enter before it goes on to the HD.

ok..

When i turn on the computer, i get the bios screen. the windows xp cd is all ready in the cd-rom drive. it is set to boot from the cd-rom first, so it does. it does not ask me to press enter anywhere. I see this message on the bottom of the screen "Searching boot record from CD-Rom" then i get the windows XP installer. after it does it's little loading of drivers and files, it says "Setup is starting Windows" just after that i get the error.

sorry if i havent been more clear early, i hope that was better. I am just under a tight schedule with that machine.

OK, now I understand. It may be a scratched or dirty CD. Try washing it with a mild soap. I that doesn't work it may be a faulty CD drive. I just went through this this morning and I had to use 3 different XP CD's to make it work. Good luck.

When you first boot up XP before you copy any files to the hard drive(if I remember this right)it says "press any key to boot from cd" and you do so. Then it copies all the files to the hard drive then restarts. Upon restarting it says "press any key to start from cd" again, this time you don't want to press anything and it will boot to the hard drive and start set up. Now if you are pressing a key on the second time it will try to copy the files to the hard drive again and redo what you just did. So you want to not press a key and let it boot from the hard drive.
If on the other hand you are NOT pressing a key the second time and you still get an error it sounds like the files did not get copied right and you should redo it by pressing a key the second time and recopying and overwriting the files that are on the hard drive already because there is something wrong with them. Hope this makes since, and I apologize for czt I'm sure he didn't mean it ,right czt.

I did not come here to mess with any of you. czt, I was running rather short on time to give you a call, sorry.

The computer I am working on does not say "press any key to boot from cd". I just boots the cd automatically. It seems to copy the files up to the point where it says "startup is starting windows". That is where I get the error message.

Also, I now have the other computer running on a seperate monitor, so it would be easier for me to relay any info. Before I have to swap out computers just to use the single monitor. A hassle.
