Comment:

When I execute installers that are not digitally signed I get a security warning asking me whether I really want to execute this file.

This happens only with installers and this only started to happen after I've installed WinXP SP2.

Does somebody know how to disable this warning, so that WinXP starts the installer automatically, without asking me first?

I've made a screenshot of this security warning, you can take a look at it here:

it's in german, cause my system is german, I hope you get it, I've described what it says above

Here's Microsoft’s explanation of DEP. The page also shows you how to disable DEP by editing the boot.ini file.

However, I still get the "publisher cannot be verified" prompt when trying to execute some downloaded files. I think the answer is on this page, but I haven't finished reading it yet. Kinda interesting stuff.

Yes, I've disabled DEP already two days ago by setting the "/execute" flag into the boot.ini, and now the DEP window looks like this:

the checkboxes are greyed out, which means DEP IS indeed disabled, yet, as you rightly noticed, the idiotic prompt still appears, which is indeed very strange, how can a disabled system component still issue security warnings?

The other page that you mentioned is concerned with IE download warnings, while the "unverified publisher" warning appears when files are already on harddisk, so it must be something else

Yeah, I finished reading it, and I still cannot disable the "the coder of this application could not afford to buy a certificate to digitally sign this executable" warning. However, the VBS scripts on that page will allow you view and change security settings for the Local Zone (your computer itself), which is normally hidden in the Zones list. Kinda cool.

you could just add this to the registry:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0]
@=""
"Flags"=dword:00000047

no need to use the vbs file.

yes, this adds a new symbol to the zones list, but messing around with the settings there doesn't solve the "unverified publisher" problem

PHP,

Go to;
START / SETTINGS / CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE / DRIVER SIGNING / and set Driver Signing to "Ignore" and "Make this the Default"

P.S.

I removed SP2 so I'd like to know if the above still works with SP2?

It works without SP2..

lol. everybody offers this solution on every forum I've asked about this problem. However, this doesn't solve the problem, since the setting you propose only controls DRIVER SIGNING, it has no effect on the security warning that appears when you try to execute normal installers for normal programmes (not drivers).

of course it does! this is a new feature of sp2, so if you removed it you won't get the security notification I am talking about. It only is a problem on systems with SP2 and I still don't know how to solve this problem.

ok, I finally got it! quote from the MS usenet groups:

To disable the warning start the Group Policy Editor (Start > Run, type
-gpedit.msc- and press OK) and go to:

-User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components >
Attachment Manager- then set -Inclusion list for low file types- to
Enabled and enter the file types you don't want to be warned about in
the box (for example: -.htm;.exe-).

It works! tested for myself
