I connected my WD 160GB Passport and installed Portable Apps (http://www.portableapps.com).

In the attached image you will see a screenshot of my passport directory and it looks like a mess of unrecognised/unknown files/folders.

What do I need to keep?
What can I delete?
I would just like to see the Portable Apps folders and menu.

Hope you can help

That's strange. I added an Image url and when I posted my question, I could see the image. I will retry adding the image.

Just in case the direct url for the image is at: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y2...

"...a mess of unrecognised/unknown files/folders..."

In the eyes of the beholder, I guess. Looks quite clean and straightforward to me.

Your Portable Apps is there, as well as the WD Synchro utility, which seems to have been doing the job it's designed for.

I have used other drives before and never came across all these 'unnecessary' folders, hence my question.

I am still confused on the following folders:

1. top two with the long alphanumeric name
2. autorun folder
3. system volume information
4. the two autorun text files
5. Can i delete the zip folder?

Any of the folders/files I can delete and make a little more beautified to these beholding eyes ! :-)

Have you performed any backups? The first two listings could be the names of backup files.

OTH, you must not have Images on or you'd be able to see the screen print the OP Posted...

The first two folders can be deleted without causing any problems, I believe. I'd leave the others.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Thank you for your response, Jennifer and also to OnTheHill. Both of your help appreciated.

Jennifer, just for my knowledge (!)
- what are those folders?
- how did they get onto the USD Drive? (Are they actually supposed to be somewhere else?)

I think the unexpected "extras" are a result of the WD Sync doing it's job. There appear to be two autoruns in the root directory (???) -- which certainly is not a good idea.

The WD Sync (synchronization and encryption) is likely what is "troubling" you. Dis-able it, if you want to use the WD as strictly "regular" storage.

More info about those two autorun text files (open in Notepad) would be very useful, and could point the way to a simple/easy solution.

On the left side: identical, and only point to the WD icon, neither has an Open statement.

Yhe "autorun_1" in the Root Directory is the autorun for your Portable Apps. I presume it was "automatically" renamed with the added "_1" to prevent overwriting, which likely would render it non-functional as autorun...

To proceed with some measure of caution, rename the first Root Directory "autorun" by adding a "bak" extension, then rename "autorun_1" by eliminating the "_1" part.

Now, when you connect the WD USB, it should automatically open up to a Portable Apps Menu (listing the Portable Apps available).

This may not have been your intention, but the presumed PortableApps Image file (*.iso?) you 'installed' from was meant to burn to it's own CD.

We can always change that later, after you describe in detail what you want it to "look/behave" like.

It is possible to have more than one autostart, but then you have to create your own original Autorun menu to handle the rest (can be a simple html file with links).

Addendum: autostart makes sense for a CD, or a Flash/Thumb/Pen Drive, but not really for a 160GB HD...imho.

Seems like I am getting somewhere. Appreciate your help.

I have screenshot of what the USBHDD directory looks like. I tidies up all the WD stuff and put them into the one folder 'WDstuff' to be dealt with later.

1. The identical 'autorun' without OPEN can be deleted? or leave them as they are?

2. System volume Information: Why is there? Can I/should I delete it?

3. Renamed the Autoruns as you indicated.

4. However, when I connect the USBHDD, the HDD does not 'autostart'. I have to go into the E:/ directory and double click on the P-Apps menu shortcut.

5. I dont need more than one autorun. Just the P-Apps autorun.

Once I get this and the WD Stuff sorted out, I hope to then setup the WD sync.

Trust I am not making it too convoluted and elongated!! :-)

Okay, it looks to me like that autorun.inf would work on a CD, or a Flash/Pen Drive.

That Portable Apps was meant to Autostart on a Portable device, hence the name.

Anyway, let's make that "beholding" a little "prettier", shall we?

Here is the structure of the PortableApps after it is self-extracted:

• [folder] Documents
• [folder] PortableApps
• autorun.inf
StartPortableApps.exe

The only items you need are the two shown in bold above... everything else can go (but if that is your only source of the WD Sync utility, then back it up somewhere).

The PortableApps folder is structured this way:

[multiple folders] Names of portable apps
• desktop.ini

One of these folders is called:
• [folder] PortableAppsMenu

This folder contains the file PortableAppsMenu.exe

To make things even simpler, I can suggest you create a shortcut to that file right in the Root Directory of yout E: drive.

In the end, your E: drive would look like this (2 folders, one file):

• [folder] Documents
• [folder] PortableApps
Shortcut to PortableApps

Do not alter the "desktop.ini" files or the Documents folder/subfolders.

That's all she wrote.

BTW, I noticed in two screenshots, an icon labeled Folder Sync on the Toolbar. Is that from WD Sync, huh?

Screenshot of 'beautified' and very nicely being beholden E:/ directory. Thank you kindly!

The shortcut you mentioned is already in there. This is the round button with the circular arrow.

The WD Stuff is where the Sync prog stays hence I have kept that folder.

The portable apps autorun still will not autorun. Anything I can do to get it working?

Otherwise, it's pretty much nice.

The Folder Sync you refer to is from Office 2007 Ultimate which has the new Groove Syncronisation for collaboration @ Microsoft Office Groove 2007 product overview

Thank you very much for your help:

On quickly scanning the original "autorun_1.inf", I may have missed the "shortcut already there"... The "Hide extension for known file types" has always confounded me, and see no useful purpose for it, but that's me.

It may be that Windows has not allowed for Autorun on such a device as yours. I don't own one of those, so am not familiar. Perhaps if you right-click on the E: drive, and check the Properties, you might see an AutoPlay/Autorun Tab, from where you can configure it differently?

Still, though, are you sure you would want Autorun on a HD that size, which presumably you will use for lots more than just your PortableApps (like eventually, the WD Sync, maybe)?

Happy beholding.

Re: Autorun

Couple of extra clicks to get Portable Apps going won't hurt.

Thus, I agree with you when you point out if i was 'sure you would want Autorun on a HD that size, which presumably you will use for lots more than just your PortableApps (like eventually, the WD Sync, maybe)?'

Thank you again for your help, justcuz. Now excuse me while I create another thread for a question I have on Outlook 2007 . :-)

Seriously; Thank you for helping out.

Just when it was safe to go back in...JAWS!!!

Plugged in my USBHDD and I found two 'unnecessary' folders. This time a mirror copy alongwith contents of the Recycle Bin on my Desktop!! And the System Volume Information folder.

How did these get onto my USBHDD?
Should I remove them?
How can I remove them?

I went into the 'properties' of the Recycle Bin and changed the setting to 'configure drives independantly'.

Even then these folders are still there.

HELP!
