Hey,

About a week ago I installed the trial version of Nero. When it installed it set my Music and Video Files to play on its Media Center. I then un-installed it a few days later. But now all my mp3s, midis, and all my video files show that Unknown File Icon.

And I have associated them with programs. I can double click a music file with the unknown icon, and Winamp will pop up and play it. I can click a Video file with an unknown icon, and Windows Media Player will come on.

I know this doesn't really affect my playing of these files, it's just annoying to see all these unknown file icons when the file is known.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

I have a image file of the unknown icon incase your unsure, a link to it is below.

Hi,
Try this....
Right click on the icon, properties on the general tab / where it says opens with / select the change tab / then select say win media player, they should then change.

G'day Joey, when programs hijack my icons [wheather installed or removed] I always go into the Registry in Hkey_Classes_Root and look for the extension subkey to see if a Defaulticon key or other unfamiliar subkey with an icon path and delete it. This generally does the trick. Some programs after removal leave this path that seems to overide the actual DefaultIcon that is still present in the filetype.

The registry splits associations into two parts, one for the extension which is the top half of Hkey_Classes_Root and the filetype subkeys that are below the extensions that house the real DefaultIcon.

Example

[extension]
Hkey_Classes_Root
..- .mp3

[filetype]
..+ mp3file
...- DefaultIcon -> default = "path to icon"
...+ shell
....+ open
.....- command

I would look at the .mp3 subkey for irregularites but the mp3file subkey I would only check to see if the DefaultIcon path is in tact.

That's what I would do and I suspect that's all you need to do as well.

Joey, You could also go into Folder Options>File Types tab and hilite the file extension, click the "Advanced" button, click the "Change Icon" button and choose the icon you want and OK your way out.
