Subject: Unistalling MS WorksOS: XP Home SP2CPU/Ram: 1.6Ghz with 512Mb RAMModel/Manufacturer: Chr'ony |
Comment: Not sure how I got 'Works installed (OEM XPH, e.g; no XPH CD-ROM) but am guessing that 'Works came in w/MS Office Standard Edition 2003 (listed in my add-remove progs list) despite my actually having purchased MS Office Student and Teacher 2003. So because I don't use 'Works (a bit of a memory hog at >200MB's), I suspect unistalling 'Works might create several issues (e.g.; by default Windows wab is maintained by 'Works so I could lose the wab, plus I hear 'Word enables spreadsheets which I don't use except for 'Words Excel, but I'm wary of messing up any of my spreadsheets I have in 'Word's Excel). Just trying to trim the OS down by safely getting 'Works off the system (e.g.; add-remove progs/change) but am holding off as my previous post on this received such little response. Reply: (edit)Hello, I think you would be safe. However, I recommend backing up you spreadsheets and address book just to be on the safe side. Backup Address books in Outlook Express The Outlook express address book consists of your username plus the extension WAB. (The file is typically saved in the C:\Windows\Application\Data\Microsoft\Address Book folder) username.wab Go to Start -> Find -> Files or Folders. Find All Files dialog box will open up. In the Named text box type the name of the file you are looking for (your username.wab) and in the Look in: text box select C:. Then click Find Now. Your username.wab file will be displayed at the bottom. Right click on the username.wab file. Select Copy. From My Computer go to the location you want to backup the data. Right click and select Paste. Note: Outlook Express has a noval feature that allows you to backup your Address Book to the Web--specifically, to a Hotmail account. It also lets you read your address book from any computer with a Web connection. You can only take advantage of this new feature if you've installed the Internet Explorer 5.01 update (released January 2000) or later. It also works only with Windows 95 or Windows 98, not Windows 2000. First, add your Hotmail account to Outlook Express. Next, open the Windows Address Book (click on the Start button, click Run, and enter WAB). From the Windows Address Book choose Tools, Synchronize. (Note that this option is not available from the Tools menu in Outlook Express). The synchronization process is quick and works both ways Found at http://www.winona.edu/its/techsuppo... Reply: (edit)Thanks Mark. As 'Works reportedly manages windows wabs, the typical wab storage location doesn't really lend a lot of credence to 'Works having much if any significance to the file's maintenance. Surprized that nobody told me to just do the deed (making sure system restore is on) and restoring if needed, but then I think I'd rather a trip to the dentist than trust using it what w/my experiences using it. And since nobody knows what Bill keeps up his sleeve, with what little we're able to glean ourselves, we are forced to either experiment or trust in the experiences of others. Hasn't anyone unistalled this critter? Regards and hap-e-trails, Steve Hopper

Reply: (edit)I wasn't suggesting setting a restore point. I don't trust it much either. I just meant to make a copy of the wab and spreadsheets in another folder by manually copying the files. If after the uninstall your wab is gone, which I doubt would happen, you could then import the copy directly from outlook express. Mark Spencer MyComputerTec

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the reply. Since I always keep backups of those things, I simply used add-remove to rid my OS of this useless Gb program. Noticed that I lost Wordpad though. Seems one of my applications needed it for some obsure use, but don't recall which one. Suppose that's likely why I might have installed MS Works, but my system sure perked up as soon as I removed the darned thing (regardless of 50% free resources).
