only thing i can think of is that you installed XP using NTFS and then installed 98 on that. 98 wont work with NFTS. if you did install as NTFS you are limited to either
reinstalling XP or another OS that uses NTFS (2000 and NT)
completely wiping the harddrive of all data and creating a fresh partition to work with.
