I just received a computer preloaded with XP Home. Becuase of compatability issues, some of my applications won't work. I would like to delete XP and load 98 SE. The manufacturer won't help. I thought I would try and partition the drive and load 98 as a dual, but I can't get XP to partition. Can someone help?

You're in for a rough ride if you install '98 *after* Xp, it really doesn't work and causes a lot of head scratching.

Format the drive by using your Xp CD as a boot disk (I'm assuming you have one), once at the setup screen you can use the format utility. Then install '98 fresh.

If you really want both OSs, you can partition the drive in the same place as you formatted, and install Xp on the second partition once you have '98 set up.

You can run the 98se software if you turn on the compatability feature. As for creating another partition, there is software out there that can do it. But it can be risky. BACKUP EVERYTHING!!!!!

These is no problem installing 98 after XP. You just have to do a repair of XP using the fixmbr utility as found if you start the XP install and choose repair.

If you want to install just 98 your first stop would be to locate and download delpart.exe. Use this to delete the XP partition. You can try using 98's fdisk first. You have to do this from a boot diskette.

Then use a 98 boot diskette containing fdisk to create a new partition. Use format from the boot diskette to format c: /s [actual command].

Install 98 as normal.

That is all there is to it.
