Hi I have always wondered what the numerous uninstall files are in the windows directory. I think that is what they are called anyway. Are they like temp files or are they to uninstall certain applications?

They are uninstallers for MS hotfixes etc.

They can be deleted without problem but if, in the future, you might want to uninstall a hotfix you should copy them for backup first.

Personally I just ignore them.

Some readup is always helpful:

Removing $NTUninstall updates in wrong order may cause XP to stop functioning

Can $NtUninstall folders be deleted?

Like Valerie said, I also ignore them. They are not doing any harm to the OS. Curious: What led you to examine the files and folders under Windows directory?

I almost overlooked one more link HERE. It talks about the Doug Knox's FREEware that removes all HOTFIX backups from the Add/Remove Program. This article also explain difference between what you see under Windows directory and what's listed in the Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks ok will do the research. I often have
a look at what is happening here and there
on windows in order to understand more of
what I am doing. Best way to learn. Don't
worry I don't delete anything I am not sure
of. I am definately no beginner.
