Specs: Windows 7
I bought a used computer, however I want to uninstall xp and reinstall it. When I put disc in, it tells me that the windows that is on there is newer than the original install discs and it will not let me go any further. How can I get around this problem so I can do a complete reinstall of XP. Thanks

Yes, sounds like the previous owner has installed one or more Service Packs, but your CD is just the original version.

To solve the problem you need to first format the partition that contains the existing Windows XP installation. Or delete the partition then create a new one.

Do that before trying to install Windows XP from the CD. Windows Setup should allow you to format or delete the partition if you read the prompts on Setup screen.

It sounds like you're trying to reinstall XP from within XP, that's not how it's done. You need to boot off the CD, delete all existing partitions, create at least 2 new partitions (one for Windows, one for storage), format using NTFS, then proceed with the installation. However, if you have a SATA HDD, it's not quite that easy.

You will also need drivers for the chipset, graphics, audio, network, wireless, etc. Not to mention anti-virus software, SP3, IE8, plus a more up to date browser such as Firefox.

If the CD is XPSP3 there will be no issue with SATA drivers. Also he could have been trying to install from the disk without being in windows. If you don't choose to format the drive you will have the same problem.

Thank you for the information, I now have that part straightened away, however now when I try to install my virus protection it will not install. I did a system restore to take it back to the day I reinstalled windows but now the virus protection will not load. Have no idea on how to repair this.
